Dinner with President of UA

My son was invited to dinner in Mobile with the President of UA. It is to be at someone’s private home. Did anyone get an invitation? The honors college described it as business/casual for attire. What would you suggest that my son wear. He owns one suit and is mostly a t-shirt and jeans guy and could care less about wrinkles etc.

Dress pants, tie and long sleeve shirt? Jacket or not? His only jacket goes with the suit.
I really need help with this. I am planning on wearing black dress pants with a nice shirt.

As someone who has experience with formal occasions, I would advise your son to wear khaki slacks, navy blue sports coat (you can probably rent one or get one at goodwill), light colored sportshirt, and a tie is optional. Also, a nice sweater or cardigan would be acceptable instead of a sports coat. And for you personally, I advise that you do not wear a white shirt! You will look like a waiter with that and black pants.

i second the previous posters suggestions.

khaki pants, blue blazer, shirt and tie.

he can always ditch the tie if it looks like nobody else has a tie on.

you can get a navy blazer at a store or at a thrift shop. thrift shop is fine, though. you might be able to get a nicer one there than you would get if you went looking for a "cheap" one. most of the suits and sportcoats at the thrift store are probably outgrown, not worn out.

The blue blazer is a overdone in my opinion. I think sweaters/sweater vests are better.

Tie and jacket are not needed for this event. My son has attended a few of these "nice-business casual" events. A pressed dress shirt (not a loud color or busy print) and a pair of slacks is fine.

well, how did it go???

We went to the reception and it was very nice. It was attended by about 20 other students. My son wore slacks with a long sleeve button shirt with tie. He was fine and not overdressed. The university had several college students there to answer questions and the President of the university spoke as well as the Dean of the Honors College.

The University is very committed to its students and all of the people I spoke with were impressed with what the Univesity has to offer.

My son applied to the Fellows Program but was not selected as a finalist. He was disappointed at first but is fine now. He has made his final decision and will be attending UA in the fall in the Honors college.
