I'm in a bit of a pickle. I recently found out that because of the way my scholarships were distributed, I still have about $1600 left on my student account. I tried to get a private loan from Sallie Mae, but because of the financial issues my family is having, my application was denied. I was thinking of signing up for the TERP payment plan, and trying to get a job working the front desk in my dorm so I wouldn't sacrifice study time. My question is does this sound like a feasible plan? Do I have any other options?

Were you not offered an unsubsidized Stafford? Did you file a FAFSA? I have scholarships in excess of COA, an EFC of well over $50K, yet every year I’m still offered a Stafford (which I decline).

I have scholarships that cover a little more than tuition. Then I have loans subsidized and unsubsidized that I thought covered the rest. My EFC is around 14K. Yes I did FAFSA. Is there any way to apply more federal aid?

Getting a job as a community assistant (front desk of your building) is a great way to make money while not sacrificing study time. Go with the terp payment plan, it’s easier. Sounds like a good plan. Good luck, and have a great freshman year.

I tried applying for CA over the summer and got this message: “The application for North Campus Community Assistant for 2012- 2013 was due by Friday, May 25,2012 at 4:00 PM.” The date for South Campus was in April and it said that you had to move in early August for training.
I was pretty disappointed since it looked like a good job to have with the weekly graveyard and occasional weekend shift being the only inconveniences. I did know a freshman who had a CA job though so there might be a way to get one still.

If you have filed your fafsa on time (I think by feburary 15th or so), you were automatically considered for federal aid. If they haven’t offered you anything by this time, it probably means that you don’t qualify. Or it’s possible that you submitted the fafsa after the deadline? If that is so, they won’t offer you federal aid.

It seems to me, your only choices are to do that terp payment plan, or get a private loan. I was about to get a few K from Wells Fargo. But just before it was about to be disbursed, I cancelled it because the school suddenly offered me the perkins loan just a few days ago.

You should know, you’ll get charged an $85 late fee if you don’t pay your bill on time. a Private loan can take a few weeks to get authorized, so you should get started on it if that is what you plan to do.
