Direct admission to material science major?

Today, I got an E-mail offering a direct admission into the material science and engineering major.

It said that this opportunity is for "small" group of people, but it really does not specify anything more.

So, is it a good thing? Ok thing? or great thing? as in opportunity wise?

I am fixed on majoring on engineering, so choice is pretty much made, but I am not sure about making it a fixed thing.

and also, how hard is it to get one of these offerings? is it an offer that I should be proud of and take it? or is it like a offer given to every enrolling freshmen?

Also, if you have any idea about UW honors chance, please chance me at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-washington/1104720-honors-program-acceptance-anouncement.html.

I know it really depends on my letter of rec. and essay… but still…

OH…

and how is UW material science department? any good?
