Direct Admit to Kelley School of Business, but having trouble deciding between colleges? - 2015

May 1 is right around the corner, and even though I’m still waiting on April 1 results, I don’t think I’ll get into the other schools I applied to so here is what I’m deciding between right now:
-Indiana U. Bloomington - direct admit to Kelly School of Business - studying marketing
-UC Irvine - studying economics
-University of Washington - studying Business Administration

My biggest concern is choosing a school that I’m proud of, or choosing a school that has a good name. Honestly, Indiana U is an ok school (in my family’s eyes, and now through my eyes) and UWash would seem like a much more fun school to go to. BUT I wouldn’t have to stress or work as hard in IU, and I wouldn’t have to worry about getting into a business school. As for UC Irvine, I like the location and LOVE the weather, but I’ve heard that UC’s don’t really prepare you because they mainly only teach you the theory of the subject, therefore you get no hands-on practice. Even though econ isn’t what I want to get into, it’s a good foundation AND UCI is really cheap for me (since it’s in-state).

Money isn’t a major concern in my family, but I would like to save as much money as I can. I heard that I should go to the school that I’m proud of, and honestly speaking, I would feel a bit embarrassed if I went to Indiana U. In fact, I would probably have to justify the fact on why I chose that school. I love UWash and UCI for their location, and I would be proud to go to any one of them, but their programs aren’t as good as Indiana’s.
Please help! I’ve asked so many people and they haven’t given me any helpful answers

Seriously? Here in the Midwest, Kelley would definitely be more respected than business at UDub or UCI.

Which just goes to show that basing how you feel about a school on other people’s feelings is really silly.

@nymint. PLEASE do your own research. Maybe before even posting something like this. You wouldn’t be proud of going to Business school that consistently ranks at or near the top 10 overall every year, top 20 in EVERY category and #1 with recruiters and placement? Are you going to school for pride or a job? If your going for a job than Kelley is your best choice.

Your other comment about not working as hard at Kelley (in a top 10 school) is critically flawed. My son is in Kelley and works long hours . He isn’t stressed our because he stay on top of things. A lesson that some talented kids needs to learn. So, if the reason is that Kelley is even in the picture is because is “easier” then those lower ranked schools then you would be disappointed. On this Kelley is not for you.

My advice, come for a visit. See how it feels at Kelley. Then go to the west coast west coast if you still wouldn’t be proud.

I’m afraid that your comments and your parents perspective are based out of not really knowing. Which is fair, because all I know about UC Irvine is that they play great volleyball. As far as UW it is located somewhere in Washington State and it might be rainy.

I DO know that Kelley is seen as a better Business school than either all over the country.

Thanks everyone! Yea I admit that the general belief in my community is that UC schools are the main way to go…And others are inferior, which I know is completely wrong now. Even though I was being pretty narrow minded, thanks so much for the advice and polite responses

I wouldn’t say IU’s business school is viewed as better than U Dubs all across the country. Not the case in the west.

Kelley has an excellent reputation in the Midwest, but it’s a Wall Street Target (at least the IB Workshop), whereas UCI and most UCs aren’t (Haas is, at a similar level as Kelley) nor is UWA. So it depends on what the OP plans to do with his degree.
A general business degree is considerd useless - less rigorous than most majors, with less reading, less writing, etc. than other majors.
So I think your real choice is between Economics at Irvine, or Marketing at Kelley.
