It appears that some of the studios affiliated with Tisch/NYU (such as Atlantic Theater Company) also offer direct admission to the studio for a 2-3 year course of study. Can someone provide input as to the pro’s/con’s of enrolling through the university as opposed to direct with a studio? Obviously one would not receive a degree or take any liberal arts courses if not enrolled at NYU, but is the conservatory training the same? If the academic requirements of NYU would preclude a student from getting in and having the opportunity to study at one of the studios, is direct application to the studios an option? Thanks for any info.

Yes, as far as I know a student can apply directly to one of these studios and enroll simply as a drama student, unaffiliated with NYU or Tisch. Several of these studios preceded the establishment of Tisch, so they have an independent existence.

My son's at Adler. He talks all the time about the kids in the studio. Thinks very highly of them. I don't think the NYU and studio students take drama classes together, but I might be wrong about that.

Anyway, definitely another option, I would think. How do they select students? Grades important? SATs? Audition? don't know, but I'm sure their websites will fill you in.

I know that at Strasberg that students can indeed apply to the school independently, and that only through NYU/Tisch can you receive college credit for the classes. NYU kids don't take classes with Institute students, and while NYU students have a set schedule freshman and sophomore years, independent students have more choices in electives and stuff like that. They also have more of a choice on what times they can go--half semester, full semester, stuff like that--while through Tisch everything is set. Most independent students at Strasberg are also international, from all over the world (some don't even speak English all that well), and it was nice to see them around.

To apply independently to Strasberg, an application and personal statement are required...they don't ask for SATs or transcripts and stuff like that. I don't think there are any scholarships, though.

The only NYU/Tisch drama studios that you can apply to without being a student at NYU are Atlantic, Adler, Strasberg, and (I think) Playwrights Horizons. ETW, Meisner, and Tech Track are administered by Tisch, and CAP 21, even though it is an independent studio, only enrolls NYU Tisch students during the academic year, although anyone can apply and attend for summer session.

There was also a question posed to one of my acting teachers this year at Strasberg: whether or not classes were the same for both NYU students and Institute students. She said that the classes were different because a lot of the students' English-speaking skills were limited and also because they tended to be older. That doesn't mean they were better, but you should look into the classes at whatever studio you plan on enrolling in independently to see if it's a good fit.

Great info. Thanks! This is not a first choice to do this, but just something to consider if needed.

I think it depends which studio you were looking to enroll in.
