Direct Hits 2011

Does anyone know when the 2011 copy of Direct Hits will be released? I plan on taking the october SAT exam and I'm currently preparing vocabulary with TestTakers flash cards and DH 2010 volumes 1 and 2.

DH 2011 is nearly 90-95% identical to DH 2010 give or take a few synonyms here and there. I doubt it would make much difference. But it should be out late september which shud give you enuf time to at least learn the 15-20 extra words between the two volumes it contains if you really want.

To the best of my recollections, I remember hearing late September.

Wow, thanks so much guys :D.

it’s out. check on Amazon

I just completed a through review of the 2011 edition of Direct Hits Core Words. It turns out that DH did a comprehensive and surprisingly sophisticated revision. Core Words contains 15 new boldface words. But these words are just the tip of the iceberg. Core Words also contains 35 new examples. These examples are drawn from pop culture (Glee, Twilight, Jersey Shore, Avatar, Inception etc), current history (Gulf Oil Spill) and from APUSH topics (William Lloyd Garrison, The Greensboro Four etc). In addition, these new examples include 30 new words that have all been added to the index. These new words appear to have been carefully selected from last year’s SATs. For example, you’ll find DROLL on page 6 and POLYMATH on page 69. So altogether, Volume 1 actually includes 45 new words. I’m going to examine Volume 2. I’ll post my findings later today.

I don’t have 2010 to compare 2011 with, but so far, 2011 volume 1 is really good. I’m waiting for volume 2 to arrive in the mail.

I can’t wait to get the new copies and see the new examples and additional words. Polymath was one of the hardest words/sentence completions on the Oct 09 SAT.

Can anyone give a quick review of DH Volume 2? How many new words? I just bought the 2010 edition (I can’t believe I didn’t see the new edition), and I’m seeing if it’s worth waiting the extra shipping time for the new edition.

Thanks!

I just got DH 2011 Volume 2, and it looks great - I don’t know which words are new, but there’s an abundance of them!

Just finished reviewing DH Volume 2. The new 2011 edition contains 14 new boldface words including ignominious, intransigent, and crystallize. The volume also includes 23 entirely new examples. These new examples include DH’s trademark combination of pop culture (The Jersey Shore and Lil Wayne) and academic examples (The Hollywood Blacklist and plays by Aristophanes). APUSH students will note the surprising number of examples that have turned up on recent exams. And finally, Volume 2 also contains 16 new words that are included in the examples and that have been added to the index. Many of these are Level 5 words such as dichotomy, wistful and feckless that appeared on 2009 - 2010 SATs. It is apparent that DH pays close attention to difficult words that appear on recent SATs. So to conclude, like many other CCers I continue to strongly recommend DH.

Thanks for the review Dark Knight! I am glad you are still posting. I hope your second year of college goes well. I just received the new books and look forward to checking out the new additions.

where are you guys getting DH 2011 from? amazon/borders…?

^From Amazon.

Dark Knight, thanks for your review. I really like the new examples and words that I found as a reviewer of the new books. The 2010 books were really helpful on the SAT. I think the DH authors have added a few new words since they sent out the review copies based on your review.

would it be advisable to buy 2011 DH if i’m almost done w/ 2010 DH?

I have found the most significant changes (new words) in volume 2 of the 2011 books, so if you have the 2010 editions, you might want to add the 2011 volume 2.

Oh, yeah? Really? Are you sure?

They made significant changes to both volumes, but for me the “toughest” words are what I feel will help the most on the SAT, but English is my primary language and I am an avid reader so I had a pretty good vocabulary to start with.

^
Right. I have just finished first volume. Feelings=Great. Fantastic book.
I learned 80 words from second. soon I shall finish both.
Second is for those who are aiming 600+. To get 450-500+ you need only first vol. and couple tests for practice, but! key litery terms are very important for CR. there r 5-10 questions from whole test.
GRAMMATIX- has got good strategies for CR.
