Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
First-time Direct Loan borrowers must sign a Master Promissory Note, which is available online through the Department of Education Website.

When is the deadline for this?

I'm not sure if there is a deadline. The master Promissory Note must be submitted in order for loans to be dispersed to your account so be sure to complete it before the funds are needed; be sure to allow processing time. Since there are deadline for tuition and other fees to be paid I recommend completing the form(s) as early as possible to avoid a possibility of the fund not being dispersed in time to make the payment due dates. I would contact the financial Aid office to make sure there isn't a specific deadline if you are further concerned.

I'm a transfer ... my EFAN page says:

Academic Year 2008/2009 - Last Updated April 18, 2008

If your FAFSA is selected for Federal Verification, UC Davis is required by federal regulation to request additional documents (e.g., tax returns, verification worksheet) to verify the information on your FAFSA. We cannot disburse financial aid until all verification documentation requirements are satisfied. The deadline to submit verification documents is June 30, 2008.

See Things To Do section below.

Unsatisfied requirements and late or missing documents may affect the types and amounts of aid offered, and will delay disbursement and/or cancellation of funds.

All financial aid is subject to change after verification.

What if we completed the promissory note and it still has not removed the requirement on our eFAN page? It's been in "red" uncompleted status for months now even though I completed it in May.

I would defiitely follow up with your school to make sure they have a record of it. The school automatically gets a copy of the promissory note once you file it. My D submitted hers on-line in April. We called the school about 3 weeks later and they had no record of it. We had gone thru Chase who at that time routed the applications thru ASA (American Student Assistance). There was a problem with the ASA website and the promissory note was never forwarded to the school. The school rep went ahead and deleted the original note and told us to fill out a new promissory note. It wasn't until after the school deleted the first note, that Chase finally sent an e-mail that told us the original note was no good. If we had not checked I don't think anyone would have contacted us to tell us of a problem. After she completed a new promissory note, it took about 1 week to get acknowledgement of receipt. Good Luck!

are you taking the max loan?

they finally updated it
my smiley face turned green today :]

ah, ditto. =)

As far as I can tell, that June 30 date above is NOT the deadline. That's the deadline for turning in verification documents if your FAFSA is selected for review. They have to randomly review a certain number of FAFSAs to make sure people aren't lying on them, and if yours gets reviewed you have to send them documents proving that what you put on the FAFSA was accurate. But you will know if you need to do this.

For the Master Promissory Note and other financial aid documents like that, there doesn't really seem to be a deadline. They just can't give you your loans and stuff without the paperwork, so it seems like you just need to get it in before they start disbursing the funds, which is in September. So if there is stuff you have to send in, you should send it before the end of August.

If you have submitted stuff and the smilie faces haven't changed yet, don't worry. They have paperwork from tens of thousands of students to process; it's going to take a little time. If it gets to be late August or September and those things are still red after you've mailed something, then you should be worried. But for now they're still processing everything so just give it a few weeks.

I forgot some of the info for my studentloans.gov account and the email secure code and challenge questions aren’t working either so I can’t sign the documents electronically. Is there an option to sign them by paper like my FAFSA or am I just screwed?
