Direct Quotations

I have to write an english essay on this book, and my teacher said that I must include direct quotations.

My question is: What is a direct quotation? Does a direct quotation have to be from dialogue or can it be like an excerpt or passage from the book?

The best answer would be to ask your english teacher, but here's what I would expect: A direct quotation is text you copy from the book (and cite appropriately), so use anything in the book that helps prove the point of your paper. It can be from dialogue, from the narration etc. as long as it supports the thesis of the paper.
