Direction?

Hi all. I'm a rising senior at an arts magnet school in Nashville, TN. I'm trying to decide how selective of a college to apply to, as I'm not planning to pursue the arts following high school, and my guidance counselor isn't really much help in terms of directing me toward schools (I'm interested in foreign languages/affairs). I have absolutely NO IDEA where to apply!

Currently, I have a 3.5 GPA (unweighted...we don't weight grades at my school), and I'm unranked as far as class position (we only rank Valedictorian and Salutatorian).

By graduation, I'll have
4 years of English (3 honors, 1 AP)
4 years of Math (4 honors; one in middle school)
3 years of Science (2 honors, 1 regular...didn't offer honors chemistry; one in middle school)
3 years of French (1 honors...didn't offer honors for the first two levels)
4 years of Social Science (1 honors - US Hist, 2 regular - World Geog and Econ/Gov, 2 dual-enrollment classes at a community college - World Hist)
1 year of Latin (middle school)
1 year of Health (taken over the summer)
12 credits of Dance (ballet, jazz, modern)

At the community college, I have a 4.0 GPA for my dual-enrollment courses.

As for extracurriculars, I'm a member of the National Honor Society and President of the French Club. I also work with my school's Dance organizations to raise money (ie, working at Nashville Sounds and Vanderbilt basketball games) for dance competitions and classes. I spent two of my summers doing dance intensives at my school.

I honestly have no idea if I'm being realistic, because my guidance counselor seems to know...not much about schools outside of NYU, USC, and DePaul (?), lol, and I'd really appreciate aaaaaaany input that you guys can give. (I am, though, looking for the Northeast, though - trying to get out of the South, and not really interested in the West/Midwest)

I'm looking at:
Super-Reach
Columbia University
Reach
Georgetown University
Johns Hopkins University
New York University
Target
George Washington University
American University
Safety
University of Tennessee - Knoxville
University of Memphis
(although, I'd rather die than stay in-state...)

Thank you so much for looking at this!

I forgot to mention:

I have a 31 on the ACT. Didn’t take the SAT, as my state pays for us to take the ACT once, and I did pretty well on my first try (33 English, 35 Reading, 25 Math, 28 Science, and I got an 11/12 on the writing portion).

Is this low? My classmates all got about a 18-24, so I know that in comparison, I did rather well, but the ACT is out of 36…:/

Columbia is out of the question with a 3.5 GPA. Sorry :(

EDIT: Haha sorry, you added that.

Okay, with that said, you have a shot at all schools listed except Columbia, although your chances at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown are very slim. I think you’ll be admitted into NYU or George Washington U, maybe both. You’re in at both your safeties.

There’s alot of liberal arts colleges in the Northeast that would cater to your interests. Do some research. Try the supermatch tool on College Confidential: it’s very helpful in picking the right colleges for you.

Also, financial aid is a HUGE determinant of where you can go. NYU gives some of the worst financial aid in the country, so if you can’t pay in full, you’re unlikely to get a decent amount of money from them.

Best of luck! :)

woooooooooooooop
