Hey, I was just wondering what people meant by saying a dorm is "directional". Are they different than other dorms, and if so are they better. This will help me out a bunch. Thank you!

The directional dorms are the four that used to have a direction in their name, but three have since been renamed. The current names are Koury, Hardin, Horton and Craige North.

They are all relatively new and tend to be nicer than most other dorms on campus. Also, they are suite style with a shared bathroom between only two rooms.

thank you! can freshmen get in them?

yep, in fact they are freshmen dorms

No, they’re not freshmen dorms, there’s no such thing as freshmen dorms at UNC. However, a lot of freshmen do live in them, as well as sophomores.

Can someone please explain housing at UNC? North, south, dry, not … freshman, honors?

North Campus-Dorms, on average, are nicer. Dorms are closer to classes and Franklin Street, and are quieter (in general). Mostly sophomores and upperclassmen.

South Campus-Dorms, on average, are a bit shabbier but some of the nicest (ie newest) dorms are on south campus. Dorms are further from class (unless you’re a nursing or public health major) and Franklin Street, but closer to the Dean Dome (very important!). Mostly freshmen, but you’ll find sophomores in the nicer South Campus dorms. Most upperclassmen live off campus or on north campus. Dorms tend to be a bit rowdier.

Honors-Honors kids have the chance to live in Cobb Dorm with other kids in the honors program, and have priority (over other freshmen) for living in Cobb. Cobb is a very nice dorm, btw. One of my best friends lives in Cobb so I’m in and out of there, and it’s very nice.

Dry-I assume you mean the substance free dorms…Joyner, and one other one (either Winston or Connor). Basically, you can’t drink or do drugs. Not that UNC allows you to do drugs in the dorms anyway.
