I received back my paper and received feedback from my GSI on why I earned a low grade. I disagreed with the GSI when I spoke with her during her office hours, so I was wondering if it would be beneficial if I were to e-mail my professor to request to talk to her about my essay?

yes it would. but you should be VERY respectful in all your references to the GSI in your correspondences with your professor. you should also let your GSI know that you’re going to be talking to the professor about the paper. let him/her know it’s nothing personal, you just want a second opinion.

good luck! don’t have your GSI hate you, that would suck.

Yeah he’s right. That’s just a general rule in life…don’t ever be disrespectful to people (unless they are extreme cases) but especially to people like GSIs and Professors…unless you are asking for an F. My teacher in high school told me I’m very smart for being nice to him : ] and he ended up giving me an A instead of a B because I talked to him about getting a D on my final and then I retook it and got a way better grade.

I am planning to e-mail my professor to request to talk to her during her office hours. I will also talk to my GSI prior to discussing my paper with my professor telling her that I would like a second opinion.

Thanks for the advice, MechRocket and clueless2400!

Go to your professor’s office hours and say you don’t understand how your paper was graded and ask her to take a look at it. Just don’t say anything about the GSI until the professor decides whether or not there’s an issue?

First off, what is the course or if you don’t want to give specifics, what does it fall under (English, science, history, etc)?
Did you actually tell your GSI that you disagreed with her or asked her to specifically point out your mistakes? Personally, I think it’s better to really talk it out with your GSI than going to the professor and pretty much undermining your GSI, who after all submits your grade. If you think you are absolutely in the right and your GSI will not budge, then you should probably head over to the professor.

I talked to my GSI today, but nothing really happened. I talked to my friend who took the course and he told me that my paper was harshly graded and that I should talk to my professor about this. The subject falls under the Social Science area. Before talking to my professor, should I tell my GSI that I would like a second opinion?
