Disappointed

Well I've completed one term at Michigan and looking back at my grades I'm quite disappointed in myself. I know that college is a different beast than high school, ended up with a 2.83 gpa (damn english and chemistry). Yikes. I will be taking math 116, physics 140/141, engr 101, and urop, (subjects I enjoy), next term and will work my ass off in hopes of making up for this blunder. I have only myself to blame but I was wondering if anyone knows the average gpa for CoE students. I am currently a LSA student but wish to transfer to CoE and am curious as to where I stack up against the rest (probably not very well).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1058563-good-gpa-lsa.html</a> has some of the info you’re looking for (includes CoE GPAs). Good luck next semester.

it might be hard unless you do extremely well next semester. So what did you do wrong this term? Hope you don’t make the same mistake.

The quoted average GPA for engineering is a 2.9, however I believe in reality that it is higher than that. It might be possible that the average is a 2.9 freshman year, and then goes up. Really, nobody knows. I don’t think there’s any actual published data out there on the GPA distribution in CoE.

If the min GPA for cum laude is 3.2 (according to [Michigan Engineering | Scholastic Standing](http://www.engin.umich.edu/bulletin/rules/grades.html)), 2.9 as an overall average seems accurate. Why do you think it’s really higher, Vladenschlutte? I don’t think ~50% of the college would receive Latin honors…unless they do, haha.

Very rarely is the average grade in any class below a B-, in “weeder” or “GPA killer” classes it is a B-. Presumably in classes like Chemistry, Physics, and Math the average engineering student should do slightly better than the average student, I would estimate between a B and a B- (so similar to a 2.85). In engineering classes where the average grade is a B-, you will have some who make up the bottom of the curve retake or leave engineering. Upper level and graduate courses have higher average GPAs.

I don’t believe that the average is a 3.2, but a 3.0 seems more likely.

i really screwed up my english grade c+ i think that’s what put the nail in the coffin. I got a b+ in calc one a b in chem 130 and a b- in the lab

the chem is fine, it’s around avg i think. Definitely try harder next semester because a C+ in english isn’t telling much about your ability to succeed in COE IMO.

That makes sense, Vladenschlutte. 2.8-3.0 seems likely. I also don’t really know how the average is the supposed 2.8, but that is what professors have told us during multiple classes, so I believe them.

^TuesdayNinja, I think a fair number of UMich students come from high schools where they may not have had the depth of essay-writing preparation that other programs have, or that is necessarily on par with Michigan, and find themselves needing to “recalibrate” their concept of effort. If you haven’t done so already, you may wish to get some support from the Sweetland Writing Center (free service; they will review your drafts prior to submission and give you tips on strengthening your writing prowess, which becomes germane during essay-style exams.) GSIs at Michigan are often too smart to be fooled by last minute efforts (unless you’re extremely skilled in academic writing). So based on your grade in English, it sounds like a combination of time management/writing support will improve your overall college performance. Don’t be discouraged!
