Disappointment. Need help

I agree with NOT applying the same cycle if you take the MCAT in August. My daughters AMCAS was complete over 3 weeks ago, and she is still not verified! I can’t imagine what would happen with a later submission date.

Wanna…

Are you going to take a prep class this year? If so, why not take the MCAT after you have your finals? When are your finals? Early May?

The burnout after finals would be crazy. Usually by the last day of finals my friends and I are extremely burned out. When I get home, I do nothing for an entire week just to get over finals week. Take the mcat a month after your finals and you should be good (gives you one week to recover and 3 weeks to catch up on studying).

If someone wanted to apply next summer’s cycle, when would be the latest testing time?

My son will be done with his finals the first week of May. He does have some mandatory summer class that all ChemE majors have to take between junior and senior year, but I’m not sure when that is.

Just looked up the summer class…5/31 - end of june.

Since it take 4 weeks minimum to get MCAT scores back and you need time to develop a list of appropriate schools based upon your MCAT score—I’d say late April/very early May might be the latest date he’d want to test.

I think to be safe, he probably ought to aim for early to mid-April.

after hearing your responses, im strongly considering applying in the next cylce and taking a year off.

I feel like it would be almost impossible to devote my brain to the mcats, while taking physics and doing research.

It’s still verryyy important that i continue doing well…my gpa is borderline. So, i dont want to risk my grades.

I took a diagnostic mcat 2day…i did horribly (altho i haven’t taken physics), so i have alot of work to do. I’m going to devote all of next summer to the mcats.

Thanks for all the advice.

wanna,

-Actually, it is the best to take MCAT right after finals, having material fresh in your head. Everybody is doing many EC’s, not just research, you should be fine. My D. did not have a choice of having a year off, we would not support it. I do not think she was interested in taking a year off anyway. She also did bad on her dianostic as most of people around her. Not a biggy. She took it before physics, she knew that she would improve. You need to learn to trust yourslef more. However, ultimately it is your desicion.

yes…I’m thinking maybe after Spring Break???

This is fascinating. DD and I were told just yesterday at a SLU info session that once you’re accepted into the Med Scholars program, you’re guaranteed a spot in the med school, provided you maintain the GPA. Sounds like we were lied to.

" think to be safe, he probably ought to aim for early to mid-April."

-Why not mid-May? D. took it in second half of May and she was early with her application. It more depends on committee, as I recalled some still had to go thru interview, while D. was done with everything before her spring finals.

No offense to people going there, but SLU blows. It’s a crummy school that costs a lot of money to attend. You are better off going to a state school. Most flagship state schools are better than SLU anyway.

If he didn’t have that summer ChemE req’t from the end of May to the end of June, I’d agree.

By taking the MCAT around Spring Break, then he’ll have his scores back after finals end (first week of May) and he can use those 2 weeks to finalize his app list and stuff.

Once he starts that summer session, he’ll have no time…it runs Monday THRU Saturday…from 8am - 5 pm. It’s req’d for all Chem students between junior and senior year…and it’s only offered at that time. The kids do these lengthy experiments that last all day…all week…etc.

Taking the MCAT in May will just push everything back for him because of that summer req’t. :(

Dude if you’re from Texas, GO THERE FOR MED SCHOOL!!! Texas med schools give UBER-PREFERENCE to Texans and there are so many great med schools there. I think there is a special application for Texas, but the extra work is DEFINITELY worth it!
