discount for MMLA (Middlebury Monterey Language Institute) registration!

I just got this email (it will save you $55 on the registration fee). anyone can use it -- unlimited.

"Hello!

Some months ago we asked for your thoughts about Middlebury College's plan to begin summer language camps for middle and high school students.

Your reply was part of an overwhelmingly positive response!

As a result we have established the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy (MMLA) which extends the Middlebury College Language Schools to students entering grade 7 through grade 12.

For 2008, campers will learn Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish at sites in Vermont and California. MMLA offers all the fun of summer camp...in a second language.

Imagine waking up early with the Spanish song from last night’s barbecue still fresh in your memory. The words come back easily. Rustling in the hall is your counselor rounding up the Spanish jogging group, but you decide to sleep in. Soon your breakfast table is alive with discussion of today’s visit to a nearby taqueria as other campers practice how to order. Before the taqueria, though, your group runs to a morning class, and then takes a mid-morning plunge in the pool, playing inner-tube water polo in Spanish.

Each day, in each language, MMLA summer camp is alive. Learn more at Middlebury Monterey Language Academy or click on the graphic below.

Good look :)

I also received that email and thought great- then read a bit further. While the $55 registration waiver is appreciated, the $400 tuition deposit that must accompany the registration is not. Personally, I'd rather pay the registration and defer the deposit until actually accepted or had a financial aid award in hand!

I contacted them directly about that -- the $400 tuition deposit is non-refundable, so my concern was that is the FA award is less than would make it possible for my son to attend, he would be committed. That wasn't acceptable for our family.

This is what I was told:

If you want to apply for FA, you can send in a hard copy (print out the application) and send it in with the registration fee (or the coupon) along with a note saying that you are applying for FA.

Send in your FA application (it goes to a separate place) and when the FA award comes back, you can make your decision to attend then,

I also asked about the FA awards available -- the FA is determined by the Middlebury College FA program. 100% of demonstrated need is not available, but they do have funds. Once the funds are gone, they are gone.

this is the first year for MMLA -- I suspect this will evolve into a premier program for middle and high school students wanting to increase their language skills. The summer intensive language program at Middlebury and the programs at the Monterey Language Institute are very well respected among the top universities.

Since this is the first year, they are going to need a little time to work out the kinks. I'd say that asking for a $400 non-refundable tuition deposit before you know of the FA award is just one of the kinks they didn't think of ahead of time.

You are really on top of things! It does look like a great program- and I appreciate the additional information regarding FA - particularly the part about not sending the deposit until notification of FA. Thanks for sharing.

you are welcome -- now to get that application in the mail before everyone else who wants to take advantage of the free registration sends in their application! My son is working on his now.
