I know that companies like Apple and Dell provide discounts through UD for students. Does anyone know how much the discount would be for, for example, Apple laptops?

We bought one last year. There was a $50 discount.

It depends on what laptop you purchase, the savings is between $50-200. Also, you receive a free printer and free ipod touch so very worth it. You can go to any apple store with your delaware id (that you get at new student orientation) and receive the discount. There is an apple store in the christiana mall (a few miles from campus) so if you go there, you also avoid paying tax!!! They also offer no interest financing…so we felt like we hit the jackpot!

Currently, apple is having a special for all college students: $100 off the standard macbook and $200 off the macbook pro. I believe you also get $100 to the mac store with your purchase. There are also deals with Best Buy where you can get a free XBOX with the purchase of certain desktops/laptops.

UD will be opening a new Apple store in the Barnes and Nobles being built on Main St. (opening this august) so they may have different discounts. There is another mac store in the Christiana mall which is nice because there is no sales tax - saving you loads.

We were at orientation yesterday and talked to Apple rep in Trabant. After lots of confusing details, the best that I could figure out was the best deal in terms of discount, extras, service, tax savings for OOS folks, and convenience, was to wait until August 1 and order from the on campus store which will be open then. Did not talk to PC folks as my D is an Apple loyalist.

We bought a Macbook Pro in the Apple Store at the Christiana Mall last week. They honor the same educational discount as will be in the bookstore in August or Apple online if you show them your newly issued UD ID card. No iPod this year, just $100 towards future purchases at the Mac App Store. Also you will get a free download of the new OS X Lion which will be coming out this month. There are discounts on a printer which make the Epson Stylus NX420 free after the rebate submitted on line. There was also the traditional Educational discount off the laptop which for the 13’ Macbook Pros was $100 (don’t know about if there is $200 off for the larger laptops). We also got $66 off the 3 year Apple Protection Plan. And finally of course, you save because there’s no sales tax which can be up to $200 more depending on what you buy.

I would have preferred to get it at the Bookstore in August just to support UD, but there is no benefit we could see in waiting and since my D has never had an Apple product, this will give her a few weeks to get accustomed to the different operating system and features. By the way, for $99 more you can get a year of one on one in store training which may be very helpful if you’re not familiar with iOS or want to learn all about the new features in Lion.

We shopped all over last year for a MacBook Pro 13" and the Apple store had the best deal with the free iPod, printer and $100 educational discount. I would suggest you buy at the Apple Store in Christiana Mall if you plan on buying Mac. We didn’t get the 3 year protection plan but her screen cracked the week before the standard 1 year warranty was up. Apple replaced the screen in 2 days no charge (it would have been expensive-around $300+). We then purchased the 2 remaining years of AppleCare Protection Plan. Laptops are more expensive to repair than desktops. Plus, they do get moved around more.
