Discounts/Recommendations on computer software??

Very generous friends of ours are giving our D a laptop for a graduation gift. Last night they called me because they were trying to figure out the best way to get Microsoft Word purchased for the computer. They are building a computer thru Dell so apparently Dell charges an arm and a leg for the software. I said that we could take care of getting it for her (I'm so thankful for the laptop itself!).

Any recommendations on places to get student discounts on software? I checked the college site (bookstore) and that's a possibility. I'm no software guru - I use Microsoft Word 2003 at home and at work (I think!) and that seems fine to me, but I think there is a newer version - is this recommended or necessary?

Any advice would be appreciated...!

Check with the college. Many of them have deals for their own students. D gets her stuff @ around $10.00.

I did just call the college and they said she can pick up a disk for FREE at orientation from the library! That rocks!!

The bookstore did tell me about www.campusestore.com as a site to get greatly reduced software, especially for various majors.

Hope this info helps other first-timers like us....!!!
