discouraged and need advice

Hey guys,

I have just heard back from the two summer science internships that I applied to at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and at Baylor University. Both groups waitlisted me. UNMC said I was one of a few applicants that weren't flat out rejected and Baylor University said "We are pleased to inform you that you have been slected as an alternate research fellow in this year's program." Additionally, they said the minute one of the research fellows dropped out they would contact me, but I again don't know if everyone that was rejected was an "alternate" research fellow. Basically, what it comes down to is I have a slim chance of getting into either program, which is kind of sad bc they didn't seem like competitive programs. So, I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me if there are any programs out there that I could still apply too (I know most are probably done taking apps though = /). My stats, if needed, are below.

GPA: 4.5/4 (W) 4.0/4.0 (UW)
Rank: 1/327
PSAT: 209
ACT: 34
Recs: Teachers actually gave them to me to read and they are outstanding.
I'm also very involved in many clubs. I am prez of our science club, treasurer of FLBA, captain of our Acdec and Sci Olymp teams, and a class rep for SADD. I have won many Sci olympiad and acdec awards, went to our state leadership conference, was selected as the "best" writer of my school to compete in some writing comp, my econ team is ranked first in my state (NE), and I have one a few regional quiz bowl awards.

Lastly, because I have been rejected from these internships, I have began to become worried that I am not qualified for top tier schools (Rice, Emory, Vandy, Notre Dame). So, does anyone know if, looking at my stats, if this is true.

Thanks so much,
Robbie

The summer programs select differently from colleges, so still try for your favorite colleges. You’ll see other opportunities here on this forum for summer programs, and may get mail about some too.

I can assure you that both program are very selective, and probably received even more applications than usual because of the low cost (Baylor is about $500, and UNMC actually provides a $1500 stipend).

Both programs seemed to like you, so I would suggest writing to ask if any other professors outside the program take on high school interns. Or just check out the web sites of some colleges around you and try to identify professors doing research in a field you’re interested in.
