Lately I've been soooo exhausted and discouraged. As far as grades go, I've kind of gotten off to a bad start. I just don't seem to be understanding much in class. I'm listening (or at least I think I'm listening) and writing down everything off the board, but I feel like I'm not comprehending and retaining information. I've also forgotten how to study and how to do homework. I feel as if I'm just going through the motions, but like I said, not understanding. Sigh.

Don’t write anything down before you understand it because when you are busy writing them down and the teachers are explaining it, you will not understand anything.
There is no fixed way on how to study right. One advice is to be focused and chiefly, not to say to yourself you need to be focusing because you will more likely to focus on your thought than to the real content.
One more point is that, you probably don’t like studying anymore. It’s easy to understand because you’ve been frustrated. Take the opportunity of the weekend, and relax throughout Saturday to gain your energy. Go to bed early and wake up around the same time you usually do and start off planning & doing things you’re supposed to be doing tomorrow.

( I’ve been there done that)

That sounds like depression.

Maybe you need a different method to study that works for you.

I wish I could relax, but I have too much work to do! I’m constantly worrying and I wish I could just turn my brain off. I try to stop worrying and replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts, but it’s easier said than done. One thing I know I need to do is talk to my teachers. I don’t care if I have to stay after school every single day to get help; I’ll do it if it will help.

I’m in the exact same situation as you. I don’t know what to do either. I usually do sooo well in school and this year (the most important year in high school) I can’t do anything.

Glad I’m not the only one feeling this way. Hopefully everything works out ok for the both of us.

Yeah, I hope so too!

Don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s quite simple and does not require any stress. Just go to class, listen to the teacher, keep writing to a minimum (it’s probably in the book anyways) and also read your books. All you have to do is remember the important big-picture concepts. Slap that down on your papers and regurgitate it on the tests. And worrying about grades is kind of pointless in college unless you want to go on to graduate school. So just relax, you are going to college for yourself, don’t let your education get in the way of your learning.

Bad start means nothing. I started with a 2.3(uw)) at the end of the first grading period last semster and was able to pull it up up a 3.5(uw).
If you dont want to do hw, dont do them. If you dont want to go to class, go ahead and cut. If you feel like going through motions, go through motions.

Wow, this is EXACTLY me. I’m not depressed or anything, I’m just finding school very boring and don’t really have the motivation to do well or care.

Think about the "listen 20% of the time, write 80% of the time. idea. One thing I’m learning this year is to review from time to time. Especially if I don’t really grasp a concept we went over in class on a certain day, I take the book home and reread, check my notes, or search online if I need a new perspective. Asking your teacher or a fellow classmate wouldn’t hurt either.

I had my discouraged period a week and a half ago, but I’m doing way better. All it takes is a bit of motivation. In my case, I just had to go through my adapting period. Classes are harder this year, it takes some adjustment.
