Discover Scripps Program

Would anyone care to comment on the Discover Scripps program and share how helpful it was in getting a sense of Scripps (environment, students, academics) and the Claremont Consortium in general? Any feedback is welcome!

My daughter was flown in for the JES Scholars weekend last spring. She learned a lot during her visit and it sealed the deal for Scripps. If Scripps is of interest to you, why not go?

I think it would be an amazing opportunity at an incredible school. I don’t have any direct experience with the program, but I’ve heard good things about it. My D is a freshman at Scripps and describes it as “paradise.”

I got in to this program and am excited…and anxious. I am from the east coast and the travel is a bit of a hassle. But they are paying and I am truly interested in seeing the campus, experiencing a women’s college and learning more about Scripps!

If anyone has information about the weather (I’ll be going in a couple of weeks) this time of year, that would be really helpful. Also, do students dress fairly casually? I need to pack lightly and appropriately!

Thanks!
HSG

p.s. Any specific reasons for the ‘paradise’ definition???

HSG, My D thinks Scripps seems like paradise because of the warm weather (she is an east coaster like you), the beautiful, walkable campus, the pool and fitness center, the great food (especially produce), the friendly people, the personal attention from profs, and the strong bonds among the students. The education is first-rate, and you experience it in a comfortable, beautiful place with awesome people. And you have the entire 5C consortium at your doorstep. What more could you want?

The weather is likely to be warm when you are there. It’s been in the 80s-90s lately. Check the weekly forecast online right before you pack, just in case. Casual clothing should be fine (shorts, tshirts, flip-flops), and maybe a sundress in case of an event or outing, and a sweater and umbrella. Should be very easy to pack light.

Have a wonderful time!

HSG, my daughter would agree on all counts – maybe add in the beautiful dorms. Have fun!

Hi HSG! I am a Scripps student and I can vouch for the “paradise” description. I’m from the midwest and I was amazed that I can see palm trees from my dorm window and I can study by the pool in January. There are private courtyards and fountains in every dorm, and every dorm room is unique. We have a rose garden that students are encouraged to pick flowers from to decorate their rooms and there are beautiful courtyards outside of our dining hall so students have the option to eat outside.

Regarding what to bring: We do dress very casually, and every student has their own style, but it’s not uncommon on a nice day to find the dining hall filled with students in sundresses, taking advantage of the weather. It will be chilly (relatively speaking, given that it’s rarely below 60 degrees) at night, so bring a jacket!

Thanks haleyalex10! I am excited to see the campus, the students, etc. As a side note, as I asked above, do you find that student stay around on weekends and even some breaks…or do they tend to go home?

Also, if I want to get a Scripps t-shirt or sweatshirt, are they available at the college store? I have a feeling I am going to love it and want to have $ to use!

Would jeans and nice shirts (not t-shirts) be okay? It is already getting cold where I am and my sundresses are already stored!

HSG

Thanks for the helpful information. Our D will be attending.

Yes, dropped my DD off at the airport bright and early this morning. There was 1 other girl on her flight attending the program. I guess they will rendezvous with 10 more prospective students in Phoenix before heading to Ontario and then Claremont.

I wonder if our child met up with yours (Wescap) and others in Phoenix. At Scripps now and sent just one quick text that all was well and the women are very, very nice.
I don’t expect to hear much from her before her flight home Tuesday, as it seems that they will be quite busy. I just wonder if the east coast girls will be able to stay up tonight!

Got a few text messages from my DD last night. Says she is having a great time. Loves the campus, and all of the prospective students are “cool”. She also sent a few pics of the campus and a dorm room. I guess we can’t ask for much more than that.

Scripps did an amazing job these past few days. My DD had a great time seeing the campus, sitting in on the lectures, and meeting the other kids from around the country. Fingers crossed!!!

D has been overseas on a gap year but has a strong interest in Scripps. Can anyone tell me more about the Discover Scripps program and whether there will be any more such campus visits this year? Thanks.

I don’t have any experience with that program, but my D is a freshman at Scripps and is having an incredibly good experience, even living 3000 miles from home. We had high expectations, and Scripps has exceeded them. Great faculty, great social life, great weather, great academics, great environment, great experience in her sport. Can’t recommend highly enough. My D had opportunities at two Ivies as well as UVA and Hopkins, and has no regrets. The students who choose Scripps almost all could have chosen bigger names, but chose Scripps for the unique consortium, the supportive atmosphere, and the down-to-earth student body. You won’t find shameless prestige seekers here, which makes for a nice environment, at a high academic level. As close to perfect as you can get.

@jkeil911…I believe there will be an accepted students weekend sometime in the Spring. My DD had a great time at the Discover Scripps program. Each participant got to sit in on classes, interact with adcons, faculty, and students.

@nova2nova…I’m glad your DD is enjoying Scripps. After spending time on campus in October Pomona and Scripps have moved to the top of her list. What is your DD studying?

Wescap, my D is leaning toward a Psych major. Freshman have to take Core 1 and Writing 50 their first semester, so she feels a bit limited in her choices (standard courseload is 4, so only able to choose 2 other classes). It gets better once these requirements are taken care of. She says her writing has improved dramatically, and it was strong (for high school) to start with.

The thing that has surprised me the most is the level of interaction among the colleges. Pomona is more stand-alone she says (which makes sense bc they have the resources for that), but she spends lots of time on Mudd, CMC, and Pitzer, in addition to Scripps. I asked her if the all-women aspect was holding her back at all from meeting guys. She laughed and said, “Not a problem at all.” I asked her if she might want to live on one of the other campuses next year (they allow you to do housing exchange), and she said no bc she really loves living on the Scripps campus. Loves the Motley, loves to exercise at the ST Field House, loves the dining hall.

I answered more than you asked, but i hope the info is useful as your D makes her choice :)!

@Nova…Thanks! We are looking for as much info on Scripps as possible, so keep it coming. Did your DD apply ED or RD last year? How was your experience working with the admissions and financial aid offices? Also, I am sure the young Men of CMC, HM, Pitzer, and Pomona always find new ways to be on the Scripps campus. Glad your DD is enjoying her first year.

Wescap, Admissions and Fin Aid were very easy to work with. My D decided shortly after the ED2 deadline that Scripps was her first choice, and Admissions allowed her to switch to ED2 no problem. Fin Aid was right on the mark with what the net price calculator estimated, which was a generous amount. She had outside scholarships which we used to eliminate all her loans. Smooth process. I never had trouble reaching a human to talk to.

I honestly can’t say enough positive things about Scripps! The environment is seriously academic without being competitive, the workload is challenging but doable, the grading is tough but fair. My D said the classes took some getting used to, because unlike HS, the profs aren’t looking for one specific answer, but rather for the students to take a stand on an issue and back it up. Music to my ears… ahhh, liberal arts and critical thinking!

The social life is surprisingly good (D’s friends at big state schools are jealous, she can get into any party she wants, no Greeks controlling it). There are parties Thurs-Sat, lots of them with fun themes. She has a guy friend at UCLA who wants to visit. He was worried that since Scripps is all women, he couldn’t stay with her. Some people might be surprised to learn that male visitors are indeed allowed to visit overnight, no problem (so long as roommates don’t mind). Also, unlike at many colleges, security is there to keep everyone safe, NOT to bust students.

All in all, couldn’t have hoped for a better college transition for my D. She is settled and happy, and working hard.

Feel free to PM me if you want any more info.

I had no idea boys can stay in the dorms with roommate approval. Let’s keep that a secret…I keep looking for something negative, but can’t find anything. Scripps seems like an amazing place. I hope my DD can get in and they provide an overly generous FA package.
