21 minutes by train. It’s really simple. The Swarthmore train station is right on the campus at Swarthmore and the University City station is at UPenn. They are both on the R3 line, so you just get on the train, ride 10 stops, and get off. No transfers. The trains appear to run every half hour or so at rush hours and ever hour during the day. They are always changing the price, but it looks like an advance purchase is between $8 and $10 round trip depending on whether its peak or off-peak hours.

Here’s the Philly route map. The R3 runs southwest from downtown to Swarthmore:

Here’s the detailed schedule:

The trains are also on Google transit. Just search Google Map for Swarthmore PA. Click the train station symbol and it will tell you the next three departures to Center City Philadelphia. You can also get your iPhone to give you thiis, too. As of now. Google Transit has the location of the University City station at UPenn messed up. So if you ask for directions they show you getting dumped off in a parking lot and walking 13 minutes to the actual train station! Just disregard the walking part. The actual train station is at South Street and Convention Ave. It’s about a six minute walk (.4 mile) to the Admissions Office at Penn.

Anyone at Swat can help you figure it out. The Swat website also has the next scheduled train departures. Go to the FOR STUDENTS dashboard from the main website. It has menus for Sharples, shuttle van departures, train departures, current weather, and so forth.

The shuttle van from the airport won’t go by Penn. However, if you are taking the train to Philadelphia, the train from the Amtrak station to Swarthmore is the train that stops at Penn. If you are taking the train from the airport, you actually change trains at UPENN from the airport line to the R3 that goes to Swarthmore.

Van Zant, if Swarthmore is paying, you’ll probably take the Amtrak from NYC to Philladelphia and then the SEPTA train from Phila to Swarthmore. That stops at UPENN. If you are paying, you can do Amtrack, or you can do NJ Transit train cheaper. Same basic deal, but you change trains in Trenton and save a ton. Or, there’s a BOLT bus from downtown Philly to downtown NYC that the students really like because it’s like $10 and it has wifi.
