Discover Swarthmore 2012

I went on the site and it doesn't have information for this year. I tried to email them but it just keeps bouncing back, did anyone go last year so I can know what happens how cool it is?

I went last year, it was awesome!!
I remember that they put up information about it around July. And it was due August 15th, so no worries just wait for the summer, admissions are too busy worrying about getting RD decisions together.

It was a great experience and helped me learn a lot about Swarthmore and the community. They had a lot of cool events all day and all night and I think you’ll enjoy it. Plus you get to make friends with students from all across America who are also interested in Swarthmore.

They had a luncheon where we got to speak and eat lunch with professors and they had student panels where Swarthmore students told us about their experiences and the pro’s and even con’s of attending Swat.

They also sent me a fee waiver after attending, which is great if you don’t like paying for a million apps. Finally people there were saying that the acceptance rate for DiscoSwat students is around 60%. WHAT A BIG JUMP! The regular acceptance rate is around 16% so that’s a plus.

And just so you know I got accepted Monday! Definitely apply for it when the time comes

hi! I went too last year, and it was awesome!
I met a bunch of people that I still keep in contact with, and I think it’s a wonderful way to experience what the community is like and see what type of diversity is present at Swarthmore. In addition, my trip there was the foundation for my Why Swat essay.

I got in March 12th! So I’d say it’s helped my application

That’s so cool! I can’t wait, it sounds like an amazing college.

Just to comment on it helping admissions, I’d like to point out that I got rejected from the Discover Swarthmore program (I’m guessing it’s because I’m not underprivileged, though it could also be that my essays weren’t that good…) and I got accepted early anyway. So while it might help out, don’t think that if you don’t get into Discover Swarthmore that you don’t have a chance. :)

I believe the application is now up. They sent me an email invitation thing. I’m not really sure how they got my info. I think you can apply without one because I was interested in doing the program even before I got the invitation.

Here’s the application page
[Discover Swarthmore! :: Admissions & Aid :: Swarthmore College](http://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-and-aid/discover-swarthmore.xml)

D attended this event a couple yrs back, & it made all the difference for her–just completed her Freshman Year as a Swattie. These “Discover” events hosted by our LACs are a wonderful (& for many students~only) opportunity to get flavor for a partcular school. I hope LACs continue to promote such valuable events. A rising senior is crazy not to take advantage of such a opportunity.

Is this a competitive event? in terms of selection?

At the beginning of the program last year, the admission deans told us that over 500 people applied and around 150 got in. So it’s pretty competitive, but not impossible.

Can Middle Eastern students partake in Discover Swarthmore?

Sorry Penguins53. You have to be a U.S. resident

I am. I meant are Middle Eastern American students allowed to partake in Discover Swarthmore?

If you consider yourself white, then, unfortunately, I don’t think you can. Basically, the overall goal of the program is to get more minority students to apply to/attend Swarthmore.

But if you’re not, I’d highly recommend it. I went last year and absolutely fell in love with Swarthmore.

I am a Middle Eastern American, but do not consider myself white. I think I will apply.

Well, their website says that it’s an “overnight weekend program for Asian, Black, Latino/a, and Native American high school seniors.” If you consider yourself any of those, then feel free to apply.

If you have any further questions about whether or not you qualify, visit the site or try contacting them.

I am really interested in Swarthmore College and getting to know the school firsthand (it’s quite a bit of a drive for a day trip). I am Asian (Indian). However I am not ready to commit to any one college yet. Do you have to apply to Swarthmore ED if you attend this program? Or is it more of a no pun intended “discovery”? How do they determine whether you can go? Is it based on stats and essays, or more a random draw?

Thanks.

It’s an all expense paid chance to get to know Swarthmore a little better. You’re not required to apply ED if you attend. You can apply RD, or not at all for that matter.

The application asks for grades, standardized test scores, essays, etc.

I got an email from them with the whole “you are cordially invited to apply to this program…” thing, and ignored it. Went back and read it, to find that it pays for the flight and everything (my parent won’t pay for summer/weekend programs at all).
I clicked the link and started to fill out the application. I came across the ethnicity selection, and Caucasian was not an option. I then explored the website a little to discover that it’s only for minority students.
That’s what upset me. I had never really heard of the school, but after the email, I did some research and found that the website boasted the school’s diversity and inclusiveness. I really liked that aspect of the school. I thought it was kind of rude of them to send the email to everyone, but then exclude certain students (like myself).

Ok to be honest I don’t know too much about this school. Can anyone who goes to this school explain it to me? I am a biochem major.
