***Discover Swarthmore 2018!***

Hey, everyone. I noticed there wasn’t a thread made for this yet! Maybe it means not a lot of you applied… perhaps increasing my own chances… hehe.

I hope I’m welcomed here, as this is my first post and I am new to the community. Any discussion is welcomed about DiscoSwat. Hopes, chances, stats, nerves?!?!

Results are said to be coming out mid-August. I’m already super nervous. Anyway… enjoy the thread.

Glad to ‘meet’ you. My kid ended up not applying to DiscoSwat because we make enough money to feel guilty for taking the opportunity away from someone who really couldn’t afford to go to it, but we’re hoping to arrange a visit around that time anyhow.

I love Swarthmore. My sister went there. We first visited in the spring when the trees were blooming and the air was soft. Kiddo sat in on an English class and everyone was warm and funny and quietly intellectual. We haven’t been there in the fall yet. When we do visit we are bringing the big camera.

I live across the country in the PNW and am low-income, so this is really my only opportunity to visit the campus. Honestly, the environment sounds absolutely perfect for me. I get giddy even thinking about Swarthmore. I hope I have the opportunity to visit. Maybe I’ll see your kiddo!

I was just about to make this post. I applied early June after my guidance counselor pulled me out of class and told me about the program. Someone who just graduated from my high school got to attend Discover Swarthmore last year and she seemed to love it. Good luck to everyone who applied!

@kj_127 Would you mind sharing some of your stats and info? I’d love to hear about another person interested in Swarthmore. Is it at the top of your list?

AP classes: Lang, Lit, Stat
GPA: 3.6
Activites: band, chorus, math club, bowling
I’m taking the SAT and ACT later this year.
As far as ranking goes, I haven’t ranked any of the schools I’m applying to yet.

Hi, all! Discover Swarthmore is the third fly-in program I applied for and the only one I haven’t heard back from yet, so I’m just lurking around CC trying to find out when they typically release decisions lol. Good luck to you guys!

@booklover13 Where else did you apply for? Did you get in? What are your stats? If you don’t mind, lol. I haven’t applied for any other ones. Most of my other college picks are near me, so I have the ability to visit easily. Plus, Swarthmore is looking like my #1 school right now.

I applied for (and was accepted to) Windows on Williams and the Discover Wellesley Travel grant. Wellesley is one of my top choices, so I’m really excited. As for my stats…:

GPA: 3.6 uw (extenuating circumstances 9th grade, almost all A’s since). My school does not weight, but I’ve taken almost every honors class they offer lol

ACT: 32 (aiming to retake in September; I know I can get higher if I actually put in more effort to studying)

AP: World History - 5

Extracurriculars: MSA, Science Olympiad, Family Responsibilities (babysitting sibling), Part time job

Senior Year: Statistics, AP Macro, AP Comparative Gov, AP US Gov, AVID, Honors Humanities, German 5

I’m also low-income, an URM, and a first gen student. I want to major in anthropology and I hear Swarthmore has a great program. I know my stats are a little low, but I figured why not give it a shot at least. Doesn’t hurt to try!

The results are supposed to come out mid-August.

What’d you guys write your essays about?

Hello everyone! I applied to DiscoSwat super early (because I had to do an immersion program when my AP/SAT Subject Test scores came out and wouldn’t have a chance to submit my application then, so I probably won’t get into the program lol. Not to mention the fact that many of my scores were terrible and now Swat knows so… there’s some anxiety there about my actual college application)

That being said, I’m hopeful. I probably shouldn’t be but…

GPA: UW 3.85/W 4.6 (I reported UW because I was super nervous about reporting W but it’s on my transcript so)
Rank: 30/600 (I think… it’s definitely under 40 now)
ACT: 32 (I’m honestly fine with this)
EC: Debate, Mock Trial, Language Camp, Volunteer tutoring
Senior year: AP Calc BC, Enviromental, Computer Science Principles, Gov’t, Lang, Year 3 Spanish

My essay was pretty good apparently — that’s what the 10+ people who read it said (I was paranoid lol). I don’t feel comfortable talking about it here, because it’s really personal and I have a very unusual life.

Honestly, the only problem and anxiety I’m feeling is coming from the fact that I didn’t have my AP/SAT subject test scores when I submitted the application so I mentioned that I took the tests, but explained that I didn’t have the scores. I probably shouldn’t have done that (OH MY GOD WHY DID I DO THAT), but whatever.

I looked over the courses that DiscoSwat kids had the opportunity to go to from last year and they’re so interesting! (Assuming that courses are similar this year)

Hey everyone! I went to DiscoSwat last year and will be attending Swat in the fall! If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me.

@sillis I definitely think you have reason to be hopeful! I don’t think the scores are EVERYTHING to Swat, so a couple of bad SAT Subject Tests should be okay, especially since your ACT is pretty solid.

I’m super excited about the prospect of attending great courses too! I’m trying to limit my excitement so I don’t become disappointed when I don’t get accepted…lol. I’m looking forward to knowing the results from everyone on here! Whether or not we go, it’s all good.

@Kelvin82 How was DiscoSwat?! Did you love it? May I ask about your stats and general info? I know it’s a very peculiar process, but it’s always cool to know, I think. Congrats on getting into Swat too! I hope you have a great first year and so on.

I also applied! I got the Wellesley Travel Grant but not Windows on Williams, so I’m cautiously hoping for this one to be a yes.

I applied too! I haven’t seen much talk on College Confidential about fly-in programs this year–crossing my fingers that this means my chances of being accepted will be higher, haha. I’ve also applied to fly in programs at Washington and Lee University, Bowdoin College, Scripps College, and Williams College, but I have yet to hear back about any of them. Good luck to everyone who applied to DiscoSwat!

Wow! It seems like I’m one of the few who didn’t apply to any other fly-in programs (so far) besides DiscoSwat…oh no… my hopes may be too high. I’m looking forward to hearing about everyone’s results for DiscoSwat, and hopefully you guys get accepted into a couple other ones too. Sounds exciting!

My dad actually surprised me by booking a college tour over to Swat (I honestly don’t know how he did it) (and another college I’m interested in)! So that’ll probably take me out of the running for the fly-in, since I’ve seen the college, but I hope everyone else does well and gets in!

@LiteratureGods sorry for the late reply, I just finished taking my placement exams

To be frank, LACs were not on my radar when I was making my application list. It was only after Questbridge College Prep Scholars that I began to seriously look into them.

I liked DiscoSwat. The program was very reflective of their values and roots. I liked that they were candid. I sat in on an economics class and a Chinese class. The professors were phenomenal; both engaged in detailed discussions with their students. I visited in September, so the campus was blooming with flowers and cherry blossoms. The Swatties I met were all incredibly kind, funny, and smart. I loved that Swarthmore seemed to genuinely care for its students; there’s Dean’s funding, Lang Center funding, and Career Services, and CIL funding which is amazing. I particularly liked that (as cliché as this sounds) everyone was intent on making an impact on the world.

In terms of stats, I had a 1440 SAT when I applied for DiscoSwat (1580 SAT when I applied for Swat RD), a 3.8 GPA, was first gen, and am an Asian female.

I also saw your thread on Reddit; really hoping everyone here is accepted!

I plan on majoring in something STEM, maybe computer science or chemistry.

I am somewhat disappointed in Swarthmore Admissions. I emailed them over a week ago asking whether we could arrange an overnight somewhere around DiscoSwat time but I haven’t heard a thing in return.
