Hi gang - my daughter GGT has been hanging out here and telling me about all the good information and support you all have provided. Now that she's in and we're talking specifics - she suggested I get my own answers to some questions.

We reviewed the materials from PSU this weekend and she is thinking of asking for housing at "Discovery House". Apparently its a floor reserved in one of the South dorms for students who want to check out different majors. Although she wants to be a dentist, and she applied as a biology major, she's not really certain which major she'd like to pursue. The Dental schools look at GPA and as long as she takes the courses for the DAT and the requirements for dental school entry, they're indifferent to major. She thinks the materials on Discovery House look good on paper. Any thoughts or experiences or other takers on this option?

Also - on the meal plans - any current students with thoughts on which meets your needs?

Information would be great before I write "the check". Thanks.

I can't really help you with details on Discovery House. (my D lives in East) But, I know she has HS friends living in Discovery House and they like it. South Halls is a nice place to be. It is more centrally located than East, which your D will greatly appreciate this time next year when those mountain winds are howling!! As for the meal plan, we went with the 4 for our Ds 1st semester. It does not make that much of a difference for Fall semester because you can add to it at any time and any remaining pts carry over to Spring semester. You DO have to make a decision for the Spring semester though because pts remaining at the end of Spring are forfeited. Once your D is up there in the Fall and you see what she is actually using, you will be better able to select the plan for Spring. If you do not make a change in the meal plan before the Spring semester bills come out, they automatically bill you for the same plan. You can still make a change to a smaller plan after that time and the credit is put into your Bursar acct. Hope this helps without sounding too confusing.....It is all so overwhelming :)

Thanks Momfirst - thats helpful on the mealplan!

I don't know how to advise dau on housing. On the one hand, being in a more convenient area with 75 freshmen with some planned activities does significantly shrink the size of the school - which is very appealing - on the other hand - there's the issue of being segregated away from the majority of the freshman class by geography. Dau will no doubt get involved in some clubs and activities and such to integrate into the class - so I guess that counterbalances. Thinking "out loud" I guess its a good idea. GGTMom
