Discovery Weekend in Sept. 2007

Anyone got the invitation to apply to the upcoming Discovery Weekend in Sept. 07? Any one plan to apply and go? Like to hear from past participants of their experience. Thank you.

I heard from a lot of great things from my friends who attended the year before last. I also hear that being accepted to Discovery Weekend enhances your chances of being accepted exponentially. good luck!

I going to apply.....can this be considered as an "educational program" for the common app because they will be talking to us and giving us tips on financial aid..liberal arts education and stuff

Just wondering...How competitive is this thing? For example, would I be accepted if I listed 3 broad academic interests, lots of extracurrics/honors, and wrote 2 decent essays? I mean, do my essays really have to be outstanding just to stay at Swarthmore for two days?

Thanks in advance.

Dont know that much about Swarthmore but.....I'm probably going to apply.....I'd also
like to know how selective/competitive this program is.

Yea im applying too, though im not sure that with my stats ill get in. Im just hoping that this shows them that i have an interest in their school, and maybe theyl consider me come winter.

Hey everyone,

I found this website: In 2004, 131 were accepted out of 300 applicants. There's good info on this website:

http://phoenix.swarthmore.edu/2004-11-18/news/14472

My friend, who is Latina is also interested in applying for the Discovery Weekend program. I have searched all over the web, but I can't seem to find this program on Swarthmore's website and thus cannot request one for her. Can anyone direct me to a link? Thanks so much.

oh yeah, one more thing, how much is everyone writing for the "short" essays? I'm about 200-500 per essay.

I'm pretty sure you can't request to join...it seems like an invite-only program. They send invites to kids they want to go - I don't know exactly how competitive it is, but they don't take all applicants, so do the essays as completely as possible. It definitely raises the probability of acceptance later on down the road. :]

Call or e-mail the admissions office for information on Discovery Weekend. If you call, most likely a current student intern will answer the phone and you can chat up a real live Swattie while getting information.

Discovery Weekend is basically an open-house overnight visit weekend. You stay in dorm room with current students, eat in the dining hall. There are campus tours, special lectures, info sessions, opportunities to get together with various campus groups, etc. Basically a really good chance to find out what college at Swathmore is like. Most people have a blast. Plus, it makes going off the college in the fall a lot less scary because you already have a taste.

Discovery Weekend is a big deal at Swarthmore. 58% of the acceptance letters this year were mailed to non-white US students or international students. The College is very serious about diversity.

If you are accepted to the Discovery Weekend, are all the expenses including airfare pay by the school?

Yes. Transportation is generally paid by Swarthmore, unless you live nearby.

You sleep in current students dorm rooms and eat free in the dining hall. There's a train station that drops students off right on campus and the school runs shuttle vans to the airport. You might need a little walkin' around money, but that's it.

Is the discovery program only for minority students?

Substantially, yes. Discovery Weekend is Swarthmore's diversity recruiting event. That means that it is primarity for minority students.

However, I suspect that low-income white students and some international students may be included these days. Best bet is to pick up the phone, call the admissions office, and talk to one of the student interns. They can probably give the official policy.

Alright, thanks!

Discovery weekend is for domestic students of color only, it not based on income. So, no caucasians or international students.

Sooo....if you get into the program..are your chances increased to get in??

Supposedly.

The application asks you to write 2 essays on a separate sheet. Is typing them okay, or are they trying to be picky and making you "write" them?

Pretty sure you can just type them.
