the quality of the housing there is not as top notch as some other houses, shotty bathrooms...old everything}}

Ewe, sort spot among many. Smith will give 70% of the students aid, but they wont put the necessary funds into the houses to make those already living there feel theyre getting their money's worth. Those paying full ride expect better, those on aid, work study, loans and accumulating debt deserve better. Many alumnae have commented about the somewhat degraded condition of some of the houses. Emerson, et al houses were supposed to be painted a number of years ago. Still waiting. If you don't want to look at crappy walls, peeling paint, and weird glowing stars on the ceiling in some of the house rooms, buy plenty of posters.

One dad painted his daughter room last year on his own dime before he would let her move in.
I know Smith is trying but..... let's pray (happy TD) things get spruced-up better over the summer................

I know that I felt much better about D's regular house on Green St. than the house she stayed in for part of the summer on Elm on exactly that score. Apparently the same sort of disparities exist in the Quad: King/Scales is great, some others much less so.

Apparently the same sort of disparities exist in the Quad: King/Scales is great, some others much less so}}

Yup, thats what I was referring to. It's not a major effort or expense but some of the houses need paint and a little tlc. Part of the problem is the grad students live in the quad over the summer and its hard to get a window to do the work. But if this keeps up, fewer and fewer alumnae who come back for reunions and see the condition of their old houses will donate anymore. They don't feel their money is being used wisely.
Dont shoot the messenger, but some believe Smith will give hundreds of students full rides plus expenses but they cant maintain the living conditions up to the standards Smith used to pride itself. Smith was notoriously known for having the best living conditions of any college in the east, or west according to most. Thats slowly slipping away. Midd built georgous new chalets and many other colleges invested in new amazing living buildings. It would be wise to consider making the houses the envy of others once again. Colleges are a business. Investing in the product would prove to be a valuable financial expenditure when the return can be measured by more and higher quality students wishing to enroll at Smith

Would you eat in a dirty restaurant with peeling paint or bathrooms that are less than modern etc.

I exaggerated a tad bit for effect but you get the point

Amen to the need for houses to be renovated/re-painted/re-done, etc. I lived in Albright and spoke with the housekeeper after my room's termperature went straight from 75 degrees down to 20 degrees because of the high winds. She listed all the things that Albright needed- new paints, new wallpaper in the bathrooms, new windows, etc. All we got last year was a new door- only out of safety concern. Rumor has it that Albright is slated to be on the top in terms of renovations. Definitely new windows- will never forget how my roommate and I only came back just to sleep in those two freezing nights where I actually pulled out my heaviest quilt to keep me reasonably warm (very hot in normal temperatures).

I definitely thought the Quad looked so much better but I was so afraid of the party scene up there.... :)

I definitely thought the Quad looked so much better but I was so afraid of the party scene up there.... }}

You were worried about the party scene in the quad and you transferred to Colgate?--LOL

fwiw-The room draw is over. Many, many more students tried to transfer in to the quad than there are rooms. I guess the quad has a pretty good rep among more students than some want to admit. :)

Sara, speaking of the Republican Club, it's been rumored a member of the Republican club has never been allowed to be a Gold Key guide (is it true) b/c the organization is controlled by the SGA ( Democrates) and theyll never allow a sicko Republican to meet families, students and give tours for fear they may pervert their minds in the brief hour the tour takes place.

If true, ya have to love Smiths proclamations they accept all opinions with open arms and respect, and encourage actively perusing your passions no matter what your political persuasions.
God forbid you say anything politically insensitive regarding a womens sexual orientation. Otoh -at all costs the SGA must forbid a dastardly Republican ever be let out of the preverbal closet and be allowed to interact with a democratic mom, dad and their kido and give them a campus tour. Isnt equal opportunity for all and free speech wonderful?
Welcome to politics. Hope you enjoyed DC and Boston.

{{ it's been rumored a member of the Republican club has never been allowed to be a Gold Key guide }}

Not true. I can think of one Republican who is a member of Gold Key off the top of my head, and there may be more I don't know about (I personally don't keep tabs of which political organizations students belong to).

I'm also fairly sure that Gold Key has nothing to do with the SGA. It's part of the admissions office.

Rumors can be dangerous things. I can't begin to count the problems in this country whose ultimate source lies in misinformation and hearsay. Thanks for the clarification, Borgin.

{{Not true. I can think of one Republican who is a member of Gold Key off the top of my head}}

I just talked to numerous women who said there are no Republican Club Gold Key guides they know of, but listed name after name of R Club students who were turned down for the job.

Maybe the confusion lies with the fact theyre taking about actual club members and youre speaking of ones politics. Dunno, but Im not going to call a substantial number of Smithies all in the same room liars. I care too much about my well-being for that :)

Originally I didnt even bring the subject up anyway. I could care less. The students brought it up b/c it was such as sore subject, in their view.

But you're right; the guides are part of admissions. We were taking about the voting of the SGA on another issues. My mistake.
