discrepancy over duke sats

duke's sat range posted on collegeboard is different than that of us news

in us news, 1360-1540

on collegeboard, 1380-1550

one's probably for admitted students and one for students who actually enroll. on the website they only post scores for those admitted so CB probably used that on accident

^That can't be it, cuz the site for admitted students on duke.edu give 1390 - 1560 for Math and Verbal, which is different from either (or 2060 - 2330, if you include writing)

Are you guys for real? It seriously won't make a difference whether you have a 1360 or a 1380. As long as you are somewhere within the range, OR you have something significant enough to make up for a score below the range, it really doesn't make THAT much of a difference. The 10 or 20 point discrepancy could just mean like....one was reported before they factored in students they let in off the waitlist and one was reported after. I promise, if you have a 1360 and you're stressing because you think that if the 1st range is true you'll get in and the 2nd range is true you won't, I'm afraid you have a sort of flawed view of the college process in general. As Duke (and other top colleges) say time and time again, they reject loads and loads of kids with 1600s (or 2400s) and accept kids with much lower scores because of various other factors. If SATs meant so much that the difference between a 1360 and a 1380 was really that significant, then every top college would have a class completely composed of 1600s. I'm not trying to be mean, but I really hope that during this process you're able to put your scores in a little bit of perspective and not stress yourselves out over little things like this...

all of usnews stats are a year old

I think you missed the point. He wasn't stressing, only pointing out the fact that one of them is wrong

Out of curiosity, how many kids get perfect SAT's each year?

bandcampgirl, I think he was just wondering why the numbers were different...not anything deeper than that

not to confuse the issue, but the correct stats for accepted members of the class of 2010 is 1370-1560, which is on the duke.edu site.

A point that should be made however, is that this is the statistical range from the 25th to the 75th percentile. That means if you have a 1370 and you are admitted, 75% of admitted students had SAT's higher than you. If you had a 1560, then there were 25% of admitted students whose scores were higher!! (that's all the 1600's).

They don't tell you the percentage of students admitted with an SAT of 1370 compared to those in the applicant pool. That would be more helpful.

Clearly SAT's are not the only factor the admissions committee considers, but I think it is misleading to suggest that if you are anywhere in the SAT range that is OK. Clearly many fewer students are accepted in the lower range of scores, and there has to be some other very strong factors in the application to balance that out. Similarly a score of 1600 does not guarantee you admission anywhere, unless you have grades and other accomplishments to match.
