Discrimination?

Hello.
i'm a muslim..and I wear a hijab....is there a chance for discrimination. I mean...I choose what I believe in ...so can i really be ME in college?
And what about alcohol and partying? Will you get labeled a loser in college? If I don't participate?
What will you think if You had me for a roommate? huh?
thnks......

Depends on what kind of college you go to, I would think. At a big party school, then yah, you might have trouble fitting in, but elsewhere there are sure to be lots of stuff you could participate in that do not involve drinking/partying.

Personally, I would have no problem as long as you were not obnoxious about it (i.e. getting mad at your roommate for not sharing your beliefs).

thnks…

oh…i would know better.
I would give their space …so that’s not really a problem.

If you are not socially awkward, you for sure will have no problem finding friends and fitting in. I believe college students are pretty diverse. Nobody will label you a loser or anything if choose not to participate in such activities.

I would not care about my roommate’s religion or race as long as you get along pretty well.

edit: And I still don’t get why you called this thread ‘Discrimination?’.

I think there might be some discomfort at first if other students aren’t used to it.
For me personally, I don’t care what you believe in or what you do as long as it doesn’t affect me.

Anyway, I would look for liberal and diverse schools like Brown, Brandeis, and Columbia.

What school do u plan to go to? When I was in college, I saw people with hijabs, infact I really never noticed it. As long as you are not going to a school in the deep south with ignorant red necks from North Carolina, Georgia e.t.c you should be fine

^^^^

It’s ignorant to believe what you just wrote.

I live in Alabama and we have no problem with Muslim women wearing a head scarf.

Yeah, Muslims aren’t African Americans!

jk, jk. lolz.

Sorry, I was simultaneously watching harold and kumar while typing. These stuff kind of slip into my subconscious.

Anyways if you don’t, doesn’t mean others don’t. Funny you mentioned Alabama, I have a couple of stories to tell from there. For starters, I vaguely remember a guy I met in Alabama swear he “would not vote for a president who would not be able to take the oath on a bible.” This was during the era of when rumors were going on about Obama being a muslim.

She would be better off in a multicultural campus. Also she would have a lot of adjusting to do especially if she gets a roommate who gets trashed all the time, and bring random guys back to the dorm.

Hey, I am a realist, and always assume the worst case scenario.

This has nothing to do with the topic. However, I noticed the OP’s handle is MysteryNoodle with the caption “RamenWorld, where all you eat is Ramen.” I thought she might enjoy the following story:

The original poster was in India for her Study Abroad program. She wrote that:
“I lived in India last year, and both topics stem from that. One is about my experience doing tsunami relief. The other is about Ramen noodles. To explain the latter, my roommate made absolutely incredible Ramen noodles that sort of became the focal point of my relationship with my three best friends there. It’s hard to explain, but it was actually a tradition, and also how I got to really know these people…"

Most colleges have substance free dorms, where the social life doesn’t revolve around parties with alcohol. Just look for schools that offer that housing option. It doesn’t mean people who live there don’t drink or attend parties with alcohol, by the way - it just means that you have a greater likelihood of finding friends/rooming with people who share your idea of a good time.
