Discusion: What do you think can make an essay attractive?

Want opinions!! What makes an essay attractive? Everything you believe in!!

I think a good essay should be either very well written or very unique.

It should reach a depth that comes from a profound introspection.

It should be very readable.

It should be memorable.

Spelling counts.

It should speak to who you are as a person. Make sure you don’t over edit until no more of your personality remains and all that’s left is very business like and cold and clinical. The point is so that readers can get to know you beyond the numbers and words on your file, and making too many edits or trying too hard can prevent that from happening. Use your own voice!

Confused… What if I connect my personal experience with social reality? Will it make the essay digressive, I mean, no longer focus on myself?

It doesn’t need to explicitly focus on yourself, meaning that you don’t need to write an essay that says “I am a ____ person because X, Y, Z.”

For example, I’m writing an essay about my love of food and how I have always found myself to like spicier, more innovative, more unusual foods than all my friends and peers, and then I’m connecting it to how I like trying new things and how it sets me apart in terms of extracurriculars and my academic interests. So I’m not writing specifically about my personality, but from what I’ve gathered, I think the point is to write an essay that shows admissions what kind of person you are.

Also, I don’t know if you have time, but if you haven’t already read it, I highly recommend investing in a copy of 50 Successful Harvard Applications Essays. It really helped me out. :)

^___ I like rastogr’s idea for a topic! The book I recommend most highly is On Writing The College Application Essay: Secrets of a former Ivy League Admissions Officer by Harry Bauld. BTW, I am the author of the other essay book that collegeconfidential.com recommends: [College Confidential Book Review: College Application Essays](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_books/college-application-essays.htm).
