Iplayboe and all the others who were rejected or deferred -- take heart! Yale is notoriously difficult even for "perfect" candidates. Do NOT even think for a moment that all your accomplishments are worthless. that is NOT true!!!! It made me cry to think that students your age would draw that conclusion. Remember, last year, Yale was up 44% for early (when they switched to early action) and this year they are "down" 3% or so, so the net rise in apps is still 41% from what it used to be. That means they only take a small few. And furthermore (and this should make you feel better), they use early for 1-- recruited athletes 2 -- legacies 3--special donors and other connections 4--minority applicants, etc... In fact, most of the rejected students are simply kids with no "hooks." A full 40% of the Ivy classes are taken up by students with some kind of tip factor or hook (my first book outlines these stats). Therefore, there is no shame in getting rejected from Yale -- they rejected almost 40% of the apps, and those were mostly brilliant kids with no hooks. I suspect you all fall into the brilliant, no hook category. Plus, as a Dartmouth alum, I can safely say that there are plenty of schools you'll all get into that you will LOVE besides Yale. Do NOT panic!!!

but for me it's different. i have this scholarship contract with another country and if yale accepts me early, i won't have to go. if it doesn't, i'll have to go and wait for other schools. then i'll have pay a lot if i terminate the contract prematurely.
my family's not that rich you know.

What does it mean if you are a Legacy and you are still Deferred? =(

It probably means you are only a "polite" defer and they didn't reject you outright because you are a legacy, but there's a small chance that they were waiting for something (senior grades, extra scores, whatever) -- why don't you have your guidance counselor call and try to get a sense of whether you're a "real" defer or just a polite defer? After your counselor calls, you can follow up and call as well.

Michele, I'm so glad you're posting again. I am so sad when I read how kids feel their lives are over because they were rejected by a college.
Come back to the Parents Forum too!

Here's a phrase I use to put things in perspective:

THERE ARE NO BIG DEALS. You might think it's a big deal, but it's not.
The Parents Forum has a great thread of last year's ED/EA outcomes after deferrals and rejections in that round.

That's what I feared. Sigh...
Who exactly would my counselor call? The admissions office or my regional rep. or someone else?
Do you think it is a good idea for me to email my regional rep. as well?
What other advice do you have for me? What should I send in? A Letter stating that yale is my first choice? Any recent achievements? More rec. letters from non-teachers?
How does one know if one is a "polie" defer or not?

i have been deferred!!! its kinda fun if u actually think abt it that way....i mean we now have to do millions of application w/o giving them much thought since we dont have much time. anyway, CONGRATS to all those accepted, hope u guys hv fun at Yale

aisforadmission, obviously since you have written a book, I would assume you have done research on this subject, but do they really have 'polite' deferrals?? Why would they string people along like that?

omg...... I loved your books. It helped me a lot during the admission process. Sometimes, I'd read A is for Admission and I'd pretend to be an adcom examining my own file. I think one of my friends finally hid it, because I had read it like a 100 times. Thanks for the help that you gave me.

It's not often one actually gets to thank an author.

yeah! you're an institution by your own right in this site! how come you only found it (or perhaps decided to participate in it) now? will this just be a short consulation or are you planning to stick around and help out these confused kiddies?? kudos on your work, by the way!

ChartreuseGlass, stick with regional rep. Do all you've stated in your post. Let your counselor confirm your strong interest in Yale. Best wishes.

Why God Did I Get Deferred

also, i also capitalized all of that, but CC made the words lower case. wtf

yeah CC does that, shouldn't u be at school :P

wait, has ANYONE been accepted yet from CC?????

Certainly...there are several of us. Check the results pages.

polite deferral? i dont get it, what does that mean?

Like they deferred someone, but they absolutely know that that person will be rejected RD. They just want to save that person the shame/pain of having been rejected outright EA. I've never heard of it before, but I'm assuming that's what it means.

There were 7 people who applied to Yale EA from my school (including the top 2 people in my class.)

The only person who got in was the school president- with a 1220 SAT and not very good grades. He got in because of football and he isn't even that good. My entire school is dumbfounded.
