Discussing passion?

Is it okay to say that you are passionate about something over and over in an application when you have not done any research with the topic? I am very interested in neuroscience, and I have reasons to be interested, but I have not been able to get research experience in the field.

That seems like a waste of space. Does the topic link to anything that you have already done, so that you can spend just one sentence saying that you are looking forward to studying neuroscience in the future?

A few comments:

  1. “Passion” is a vastly over-used term in college applications.
  2. You should not say anything “over and over” in an application – once is enough
  3. I don’t think you can truly be “passionate” about neuroscience when you have no background in the discipline – it would make more sense to say you are very interested in the field, are excited to delve into the area etc.
  4. Best to focus your application on things you have first hand knowledge about, have experienced etc.

What have you done that makes you interested in neuroscience? Taken a class, maybe? I don’t think you need to have done research in order to be passionate about something, although I would avoid the word “passion.”
