What are these "discussion groups" and do we HAVE to sign up for them? Who leads them? Does it have any impact on our actual grades?

Do you mean "sections"?

yeah discussion sections. please help!

these are sections where discussions occur. if you still don't get it, i recommend you to post on a internet forum for help.

uh. yeah that was really helpful -_-

i figured they are just small groups of students, led by a graduate student, who help with the material.

but i just wanted to be sure, and notice that i have other questions.

Yes, you have to go. In most, if not all, classes that have discussion, the grade you receive in your section will have a significant impact on your grade in the class. It's a good time to ask any questions you may have, and during discussion your GSI will usually pose some important questions for you to think about, help you review for midterms, etc. It's a pain in the butt sometimes, but it's usually quite helpful, depending on the quality of your GSI. You can't really control who you get for your GSI though (unlike how you can control who your prof is), so that part's sort of based on luck.
