Discussion: KRAFT MAC(ARONI) AND CHEESE

I never ate it as a kid, however my husband did. Now, as adults we always have it in the house, and my daughter has eaten plenty of it (as a kid and adult)

As an Italian American, growing up we never used the word pasta, we called it macaroni. It was either spaghetti (for any long pasta) or macaroni (for any other shape pasta).

This thread is making me hungry for some macaroni and cheese! I can still picture my mom in the kitchen putting it all together, with the bread crumbs on top! I miss her and her cooking. She was not a gourmet cook but she had her go to recipes that you could count on. If it was Saturday, you knew it was going to be either spaghetti or chili!

Son eventually graduated to Noodles & Company’s Wisconsin Mac & Cheese: Noodles & Company

Unfortunately it’s not available up in Seattle so he periodically gets it when visiting. I found a copycat recipe for him. If it wasn’t for the roux, he would make it more often.

Growing up we called it Kraft Dinner. My Mom always had a case of the blue boxes in the cupboard. (6 kids and shopped at the commissary) I loved the orange cheese and liked it on the dry side with just a little added milk. I fed it to my kids growing up on occasion but they preferred pasta with shredded mozzarella cheese. As adults they like Annie’s brand and you can buy versions without the orange coloring.
I use the term macaroni and cheese. I never refer to it as Mac and cheese.

I do like it and remember having it occasionally growing up. I definitely prefer Kraft to the Annie’s version.
One place my young kids liked to eat macaroni and cheese was at Noodles and Co. - I always thought that was too mushy.

Memory - going to a friend’s in high school and his fire fighter dad made us dinner - Kraft Mac & Cheese with ground beef. He told us they make it at the fire station a lot. Made an impression on me and I would make it when my kids were young (using Annie’s) and they called it fireman mac & cheese

Not quite in the never camp here, but close to it. My kids liked it well enough, but I always thought it was disgusting, so it was a rare purchase in our house.

I made it for my kids frequently when they were young - it was inexpensive and quick. I seem to recall it being a frequent sale item which was pretty important to our budget. When they started school, it pretty much fell out of favor.

+1 for disgusting.

When my daughter was 1 and I’d returned to work, our in-house babysitter had fed her either Kraft Mac & Cheese or Easy Mac. I was absolutely horrified! Even in that remote area I was trying to feed her mostly organic everything. I did eventually loosen up and feed her Stouffer’s
which she preferred to my husband’s amazing homemade mac and cheese.

I don’t think my daughter ever really liked Kraft Mac & Cheese, so my anxiety was unnecessary.

I don’t normally eat it as I try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible.

That said when I had Covid a few months ago (full blown, I had every symptom listed including GI stuff), one of the few foods I could tolerate was Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. I went through several boxes!

“I was assigned female at birth, but according to Kraft Dinner, I identify as a family of four.”
I can’t find the original source but I’ve seen many variations.

My kids liked it and as they became teens would make it for lunch. Also cheap eats for college students. I have to admit I would sometimes take a scoop which was tasty. Never had it growing up. Always called it mac and cheese (or macicheese), and my first intro to “Kraft Dinner” was in a song.

I still remember when my oldest was little I made my mom’s homemade mac and cheese but he, of course, liked the blue box better. He also liked spaghetti with catsup over my homemade sauce at around age 3, courtesy of his dad, but outgrew that!

Thanks for the macaroni links @Marilyn. Always wondered about “stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni”.

My mom made it when I was a kid and I loved it and weirdly especially loved it as cold leftovers from the fridge.

We tried to do more organic foods/less processed foods with our kids so fed them Annie’s. One of them still loves it today and it has been a go to for her through high school, but she makes it herself now.

For special occasions we break out Martha Stewart’s Jeffersonian Macaroni & Cheese recipe, but it’s really heavy on the dairy (like a half gallon of milk). One of mine is vegan now so I might have to figure out a good vegan Mac-n-cheese recipe. We do call all forms of it Mac-n-cheese.

I like Kraft’s switch to this name better than Dunkin’ Donuts switch to Dunkin’. That still irks me. Give me Krispy Kreme any day anyway.

In the late 80’s, early 90’s I wasn’t thinking about whether something was organic or processed, I guess. We ate a lot of things I wouldn’t eat now. I didn’t like Kraft and preferred homemade, which of course, the kids didn’t like! Our Costco had a frozen package for a while from Blount’s which I really liked but sadly disappeared from the shelves. Now I want to go home and make homemade mac and cheese.

Apparently, Beethoven’s favorite comfort food was Macaroni & Cheese.

We went through lots of those blue boxes when the kids were small, to the point where one kid would only eat that shape of pasta. There was no convincing her that dinosaur pasta with the same powdered cheese was equivalent.

DH occasionally makes a variation on the boxed stuff that he invented in college - adds tuna, raisins, onions, curry and whatever else comes to mind at the moment.

Growing up my mother served this on the side to her meatloaf. She would finish it off in the oven so it got a little crusty on top . Total comfort food.

I’ve never purchased it for my family or served it to my kids. Ate it is a child. In fact have never once purchased or served anything that would be on a “kid’s menu” I.e. chicken nuggets, etc.

We like food. We eat food. My kids are terrific eaters.

A lot of the endocrine disrupter research came out when I was a new parent. I used and still use glass to pack their snacks and always limited plastic toys to high grade plastic like Playmobil or legos. My boys are going to have the last sperm on earth.

So last night I made
drumroll
meatloaf and macaroni and cheese. And I had it for breakfast too!
I do make the best if I say so myself!

I’ve had a few boxes of Kraft over the years—cheap eats when you’re starving but never my favorite. Kids always gobbled it up and easy for the babysitter.

Our go to was Chef Boy R Dee spaghetti when I was little. I still like it.

I liked Chef Boyardee pepperoni pizza when I was growing up. My mom only made it once in awhile when my dad was working , and it felt like a special treat!
