I have a discussion for math 32A on thursday but do I have to go?

You don't have to go to any class :)

And no, if I had a discussion on Thursday, I wouldn't go. A lecture, yes, but a discussion, no... usually not worth it.

No, you don't. Usually, the discussion TA won't show up if the first discussion precedes the first lecture... unless it's just to introduce him/her self for 10 minutes and then dismiss everyone anyways.

As an alumni of UCLA '05 and current grad student (although not at UCLA but at Columbia Univ. Teachers College) and I would not miss the first day of class, ever. No matter who gives the lecture, it is important (i.e. syllabus, rec. readings, info)....I did miss once and ended out not getting the first assignment.

UCLABelle:

The original poster was asking about first discussion, not lecture... since they don't give out the syllabi or assignments during discussion section I don't think there's any such hazard of falling behind here.

just walk there, you lazy bum

With all due repsect, some of us drive to UCLA from far away so it is not so fun to "just walk there".

Professors usually send out an e-mail revealing whether there will be pre-lecture discussions or not.

i have the same exact problem, i have a pre-calc discussion on thursday from 12-12:50 and no other class, and i need to drive from glendale to west hollywood. cant i just skip it, i mean would it be really bad if i missed out on the first day and all?

why don't you get to school early and enjoy the day there. enjoy a lunch on campus. hang out.

Because gas isn't cheap and traffic isn't fun. ^^;; Of course, I will (and I think armeniangirl will too) if I have to for class but its not my favorite thing in the world especially when I do it so much anyway.
