Discussion...

...is definitely "different" compared to the "sit-down-and-take-notes-for-the-entire-lecture-time" kind of classes. Now I'll actually have to apply myself. :P

this quarter I'm finally taking a course with my first college discussion... please tell me if this means anything, because I'm kinda worried-

ok so I'm taking history 2C, and my TA for discussion is really good, or so I thought at first. I had my discussion this morning. Of course, I spoke up once or twice. There were these 3 or 4 other girls though, that talked most of the time. The rest of the class (15 other people or so) didn't even talk at all. Some of them weren't even paying much attention. For some reason, the TA called on me twice to answer her questions when no one offered. And she ONLY called on me... not anyone else throughout the whole session.

Then this afternoon I had my lecture. I happened to sit on the outside of the middle row, which was right next to where the TAs sat. My TA came up to me and my friend before class started and said hi to us (we both have her). She then asked ME if I was "shy about talking in class". Then she asked me if I were a senior. (I'm a freshman btw). Anyway, she ended by asking me to talk more and ask more questions during discussion.

How come I have the feeling that she's picking on me, for no specific reason...? I really don't know what she wants from either...

you're her favorite student. :)

She likes you...I mean REALLY likes you.
Be careful if your TA makes any sudden and inappropriate moves on you.

My first discussion session was an unpleasant one.
The next session I'll try to speak out more because I really like my TA and what he has accomplished to this day. For example, he started out in the banking industry and worked for a company in China and another in Japan each for several years. While there, he quickly learned both of these languages and, I'm assuming, can speak them fluently to this day. The best I can explain his lecture style is that he speaks to us on a "family" level, which makes for even the shyest person comfortable to speak to him.

oh man i wish my prof would like me that much.... :/

at least he still helps me on stuff, even though im not in his class

on the topic of history 2C, why is there some much damn reading?????? do we really need to read everything for this class (i thought it was an easy GE)?

sofaking, looks like your TA has taken an interest in you. that could be a good thing. talk up more and you'll be her favorite.

bruinboy, there is a lot of reading but you dont have to do it ALL. especially the online readings.. my TA who is a bit strict even told us to skim it. also, we are already behind almost 2 weeks in the reading.

also, compared to other history GEs, it is generous. you get to do a performance instead of a paper, midterm questions a week in advance, and take hom final.

are you guys sure... I just feel like being picked on. But whatever. and yeah, I thought that class was supposed to be "easy", and now I don't know what to expect on the midterm/final. The reading load is insane.

oh yeah nikkei325i.... I'm a girl btw hahaha. So I would REALLY be worried if she tries to make "sudden and inappropriate moves" on me :P

i dunno...this is UCLA...theres a good amount of openly gay people here. ;)

lol i dont think she has an interest in you. however, there's obviously a reason she noticed you. maybe she thinks you have potential? or something?

i love how guys automatically jump to "dude she digs you".

And I hate discussions, fyi. I think they're completely useless. And I love not having any.

sofakingwangsta,

As a TA, I've noticed that I try to get the "don't raise their hands ever" types to talk more. Especially those who offer something good in class.

Be flattered.

ugh i know allie discussions are so time consumingggggg when do they stop????

Discussion of MIMG/MCDB CM156 is like a hell.I'm going to drop MIMG/MCDB CM 156. :sigh: Oh boy, it's like a quiz game show. Freaks are competing to answer questions about journals which I don't even understand the stuff after 5 hours of reading... I did see some people answer nothing just like me, and we looked at each other and wondered why these freaks not only could understand these journals and actually answered every questions the TA asked. And the most important thing is we lose two or more points in every discussions. Sigh...

Go to her office hours. I want to know her reactions. :D

Well she did ask if you were a senior right?

I would also agree that if you give good/insightful answers professors/TAs want to call on you more, even if you are shy about raising your hand. Some people never raise their hands and after a while the professor/TA get used to it.

Isn't a certain percentage of your grade based on participation in discussion? I'd feel bad if those shy people risked getting a "B" in the class just because they are afraid to talk / comment.

Discussions of lots of science courses don't grade on participation but on the performance of quizes.

or, discussions of some science classes dont count at all, so people dont go and the ta doesnt even go
