Disections

Hi, is it true that one has to dissect a dead human corpse as a requirement for graduating med school. I want to pursue a major in biochemistry and go to dental school/opt school, do I still have to dissect the corpse or can i just dissect the teeth and the eye?

Well if you want to go to dental school...why would you want to graduate med school?

sorry, what i really want to know is do I need to dissect a human corpse for dental school or if I am interested in optometry.
Also, what would be the best profession, or some professions, for someone very interested in biochemistry. Thanks

Well if you want to become an optometrist...why would you want to go to dental school?

At the dental schools where I know students, they do full body dissections. There are a lot of systemic diseases that have presentations in the mouth, and often times, dentists will be the first one to notice the signs. Of course there is only so much that can go wrong in the mouth, so knowing what questions to ask and where common presentations occur can help a dentist in assisting the patient on where to go next.

Optometry school...same sort of thing probably. Ocular manifestations of systemic disease are common. I only know one girl who is going to Optometry school in Indiana, and I have spoken to her in probably 18 months so I don't know what sort of anatomy they do, but my guess is they have some sort of full body anatomy.

Really though, and BDM can chime in, doing dissections really isn't that bad, and once you're used to it, it's a piece of cake.

1.) You don't go to medical school to become either a dentist or an optometrist, so you may feel free to disregard anything you hear about medical school as irrelevant to your life goals.

2.) I'm not sure what the OP's problem with dissections is, and so I'm not yet 100% comfortable telling him that it's just fine. Certainly if his concern is difficulty, then I wouldn't worry about it.

3.) Well, if you like biochem, you could always... become a professor of biochemistry.

Some medical schools now have pro-sections (I think thats what its called), where they have a professional dissect the bodies and you just go in and study from that. UAB comes to mind. Anyways medical is different than your goals of dentistry and optometry.
