Don’t agree with the sweeping generalisations about colleges vs. universities. The author uses Beloit as an example vs. Northwestern, but it’s comparing apples to oranges, one school serves ~1600 students, the other serves ~8000 students. Not really applicable to compare the two when the kinds of people looking to go to either type of school will likely be very different.
Useless article. They are measuring discounts when they should be measuring net costs. Since most large research universities are public Us in-state students start with lower rates.
That Beloit college student did NOT get a bargain- got what s/he paid for. Not too many miles to the north is UW-Madison- the flagship U for Wisconsin. Get an Honors math degree there instead and you may have taken several grad level math courses at a school where the math grad department is rated around 15th per one ranker. And add a second major in another highly ranked department. Plus take electives in a much wider range of subjects. It is no wonder over 80% of Beloit’s students are OOS- it doesn’t compare to the instate public option. UW is another school that doesn’t need to entice students with lowered costs.
under grad students are better served at an LAC in my opinion. that said it is just that an opinion.
Immediately when they compared research universities to colleges, I see the problem - if they are lumping in public research universities with private ones, that’s the issue. Public research universities are way less likely to give large grants, especially to OOS students. I note that when she lists her research universities she completely omits large public ones like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, UCLA, Berkeley, UVa, UF, UNC, and the rest.
Also, some of the schools she listed pledge to meet 100% of financial need, so her claim that they don’t give discounts because they know they can get students to pay full price is misleading. It’s more because the makeup of the kinds of students who can get admitted to these schools is heavily wealthy.
