I found the perfect song for my range that also has a message that I definitley have a connection with. The only problem is that the song was made for a Disney Animated Feature, though it was written by Broaway composers/lyricists Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. Is it appropriate to use a "Disney" song for an audition?

Disney songs are not bad choices if they’ve been made into a musical- and a lot of them have been. If I had to take a swing at it, I’d say you might be talking about “God Help the Outcasts” or “Colors of the Wind” with that writing duo. Because those haven’t been made into Broadway productions, you might want to steer clear. There is so much wonderful music written for young performers that could work for you. If you like songs along these lines, maybe you could take a look at “A Change in Me” from Beauty and the Beast.

At the end of you take the chance on singing this song, may I at the very least suggest ONLY singing them if they are your type. If you would not be castable in these roles (i.e. if there’s no way you could play an American Indian for Pocahontas), don’t go there.

All best to you on your journey! :)

I’ve actually had the same question- one of the songs in my son’s repertoire is “All I Ever Wanted” from King Of Egypt, put out by Dreamworks. The song is really suited to my son, and indeed if they ever were to make a musical out of it, he’d potentially be perfect in the part. But because it hasn’t been made into a musical proper, he’s steered clear of it for potential college audition material, although he does use it for regular auditions when appropriate. MTCoach, what do you think about that? Could he ever use it for college auditions, or is it better to continue as he’s doing and avoid it as potentially risky?

Connections- yes, I’d definitely say that this falls under the classification of being tricky. If you and your son feel its that strong of a selection for him, might I advise your looking into the specific wording for the vocal audition at whichever schools he is looking at. Many schools will specifically say “## bars of standard MT repertoire,” in which case, don’t do it- you’ll definitely be going against what they’re asking for. Many other schools, though will say something like the first song needs to be standard MT but the second may be MT, pop/rock or classical, in which case, go for it! If you’re at all unsure, I’d err on the side of caution and go with your other selections.

Like I mentioned to vivalaben, there are so many wonderful songs written for every type of young person, he’ll surely be able to find his “money” songs This definitely doesn’t mean he shouldn’t leave it in his book!

Hope that helps some. All best!

I was actually referring to the song “Out There” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame since I am male but all the same I will definitely keep it in my book in case the auditors would like to hear something else.
