distance between class

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to get from Paccar to Magnuson Health Sciences Center in 10 minutes by walking? I looked at it on the map and they seem reaaaaally far away..

15 minutes is a guaranteed. 10 minutes speed walking…possible. Get a bike, you’ll reach there in 5!

Are there bike racks in front of most buildings? I am headed there this fall and plan on using my bike for the majority of my transportation.

alexandria: yes there are. Make sure to use a u-lock though. Tons and tons of bike thefts on campus!

extimera: If you jog, it might be possible…but not even with fast walking. Also, what if the 1st class gets out late? You can’t/shouldn’t show up to the 2nd one late. I wouldn’t risk it. i would change your schedule to allow more time. That’s just me though

Thanks for the advice. I won’t take those two classes together.

I’m just trying to figure out a schedule ahead of time, I’m an incoming freshman and I’ve been looking at all of the FIGs. Unfortunately I have an A&O on the later side (July 25/26), so who knows which figs/classes will still be open by that time.

extimera, I was just talking to my cousin who graduated from UW this spring. She said teachers are very understanding if you have to leave class a minute early or if you arrive a couple minutes late due to distance between classes. So while it is probably best to not purposefully schedule classes that would create that situation, what is most important is taking the classes you want/need for your degree, and classes that best fit your schedule outside of school.

Travelgirl, thanks for the tip on the lock. I currently have a pretty heavy duty u-lock from the kryptonite brand. So theft happens even right in front of classroom buildings? I would expect it around the outside neighborhoods, but would think the campus would have better security!

I graduated Fall 2013. A teacher has announced that it was OK 1 time in my time there. While there may be a small amount of teachers OK with this, far more common is teachers ****ED if you leave early or show up late. I’ve been in many classes where students got called out in front of the entire class for this. Alot of teachers think it’s really rude and disrupting to a class.

I wouldn’t risk it. I always planned time into my schedule. If you absolutely had to…I would email the teacher before class and explain the situation and ask if it’d be OK. But honestly…I wouldn’t even try.

Alexandria: Security is as good as they can be. Yes bikes are stolen all the time, in broad daylight, next to buildings. Just like if you go to the libraries there are signs posted about people stealing each others stuff and to not leave anything unattended even for a second.

It’s a big university in a big city, and with that comes more crime. That said, if one is smart, they won’t encounter any problems.

Yeah, I’d rather not risk it. I’m working on figuring out a different schedule right now. Thankfully, since it’s my first quarter, it’s not exactly vital that I get certain classes yet.

extimera: Also…if there’s a class you really want that’s full, if you’re persistent you will get in.

The first few days of classes there are tons of drop/adds. If you keep hitting refresh you’ll eventually get in
