Hello everyone,

My DD (going to be a sophomore) currently attends a top ranked, suburban public in NY. However, due to her dad's job, and because I'm being offered a PhD in Calgary, Canada (not US citizens), we have decided that it would be best for us to move.
DD is okay with this, has gotten much more outgoing since entering high school, and school is a charter school for gifted kids.

It's a nice school with an AP program,offering some math AP's and a couple science AP's.
She's going to take calc AB/BC this year, and take Physics 20-30 and take the AP exam and also study AP Chemistry. AP Chem isn't offered at the school, so she will have to take it online. (They have Bio, but she heard about the revisions to the exam and would prefer to take it during 2012-2013)

Does anyone have any suggestions for good online learning sites? She'd prefer it to be somewhat interactive, since she doesn't want to end up doing a total self study. She could also take General chemistry at the local U, but that's expensive and all the AP chem topics might not be covered.

She very much wants to go to school in the US, especially since the high school she was attending sent many to very good schools. Because of this, I think it's quite important that she build meaningful relationships with her teachers, but it might be difficult since her math/science classes will end up being online or at a university. Any advice on this? Most of her teachers from freshman year liked her, even though she sometimes slacked off :).

Thanks in advance! I'm always grateful to have CC because people in my area are so tight lipped with info because of 'competition'..crazy! :)

Bump! Anyone have any suggestions?

I googled a bit, and I found CTY AP Chem, but it had generally negative reviews…also, D was too lazy to take SAT 7/8th grade, so she’d have to take the PSAT for admission.

I would go with the local U if it is at all a realistic choice. It may not be AP but it’s a real college course and your daughter would get a first-hand look at what college is like.

For online, our son took a course with PA Homeschoolers and I was impressed with the content and how the course was conducted. It was another science course though; not chem.

I have a question. What does it mean that you are “offered a PhD” in Calgary? Does it mean that you have been admitted to a PhD program in a grad school?

In answer to your question about AP Chem try this previous thread:

@coureur

^Yes, that’s what i meant. I got admitted to a PhD program at UofC at the Medical School…exciting research they have going there! I was typing in a hurry…sorry. Lol.

Thank you for the thread! I should have searched a little harder, haha. I will definitely check it out.

@BCEagle, I have considered that, but I am not sure if the timing would work well with her high school. It starts relatively late (9:30) and ends fairly late compared to her current school, which went from 7:30 to 2:30. I will definitely ask around though-I don’t much about Canadian CC’s, but I will look into those as well.

Thank you both so much!
