<p>It depends where you live, for a starter. 3 hours in the NE is one thing, 3 hours in Montana another. </p>
<p>Certainly, 3.5 hours makes it doable for long weekends and holidays and drop off. </p>
<p>Driving is likely cheaper than flying too. </p>
<p>But there are more factors…can you give more info?</p>
<p>From our city to St Louis is about an 8 hour drive, or to Portland OR is an 8 hour (total) flight. It all depends. I think anything >1 hour is far enough away.</p>
<p>There’s really no such thing as an ideal distance. Some people want to go away and experience another region of the country. My daughter went from CA to East Coast for that reason.</p>
