Hi guys,
This is my first post and I just received an email about my Cal Grant award status. I checked it and I got awarded ~$12000. I then checked my FAFSA and got a Pell Grant of ~$5000. Are the Cal Grant and FAFSA the same thing? Should I be expecting any more money to be awarded or am I done? Also can I only use the Cal grant towards schools in California? My last question is when I was checking my Cal Grant it put my school choice as UC Riverside and that is definitley not my #1 school lol, so how could I change it? Thanks!
FASFA is a form that you fill out to be eligible for Federal aid (Pell Grants/Stafford loans/Parent Plus loans). The Cal grant is aid for California residents.
FAFSA is just an application form that a number of different organizations (schools, gov’ts) use to determine whether u qualify for need-based financial aid.
A Pell grant us a cash award that comes directly from the federal gov’t.
A Cal Grant is a cash award that comes directly from the state of California.
The California Grant (Calgrant) is awarded from the State of California for California schools, hence the name Calgrant.
As mentioned by previous posters, the Pell grant is not the same as the CALgrant and comes from the Federal government based on the information that you filled out on your FAFSA (FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID).
“Should I be expecting any more money to be awarded or am I done?”
When you get information from your schools about your full aid package, you may also receive other money such as SEOG or merit awards. These will vary from school to school.
You are also eligible to take out federal student loans.
