If I designate Ohio State as my National Merit top choice now, would I have a chance at the distinguished scholarship? I know, the “deadline” was March 1st, but that is only if they run out of the money they allotted for National Merit. Has anyone heard back about the Distinguished scholarship?

My guess is that you didn't recieve the package you expected from the school that you designated your initial NMF top choice.

I don't know you and I don't know your situation but you've tried to play a game and you lost. I hope OSU says "No"

ddomino... you're such a businessman. priority deadlines at osu are actually more strict than most would realize. even though you can try, it's a HUGE school. Those prioritizing OSU are reaping the benefits.

"deadline" means the line beyond which you die. Eleven days after the deadline, you're starting to look like Anna Nicole Smith. Fast forward ten years. You don't pay your electric, you sit in the dark. You don't pay the loan company they repo your car. Why in the world should someone who didn't think OSU was good enough for them initially get a full ride now?

It never hurts to try.

However, my understanding is that OSU awards Distinguished based upon the March 1rst batch from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Since you didn't designate to NMSC by 3/1, you weren't in the 3/1 batch. Hence, methinks thou opportunity hast fled.

But like I said, it never hurts to try. Good Luck.

My guess is that it is too late to change your first choice in order to have the Distinguished as a viable option. The official word on Distinguished scholarships, I believe, goes out later this month. You might want to call Financial Aid for the absolute answer for your situation.

ddomino: that's an interesting mental picture...

ah, the poignancy of regret. lol.

Have the Distinguished letters gone out? Do we have any recipients on CC?

Yup. Saw it online (finally) and the letter eventually arrived yesterday. Things are now much more calm around the old homestead. :)

Same here---snail mail arrived today.

Congrats, KJsM.

Wow, we have 2 so far! That is great.

Are you instate or OOS?

In-state; son's friend rec'd. one as well---but both are contemplating other schools. The central issue becomes: pay almost nothing v. pay $$$$. Son should make a decision this weekend. Congrats to all.

We're in-state too. It would be pretty tough to turn down (not that my son ever contemplated going anywhere else).
