According to the 2008-2009 course catalog, to graduate you have to

2.Complete at least three courses in each of the three divisions of the College (listed later). In each division, the three courses must be at least 1 credit each and may include up to 1 AP credit or credit awarded for work done elsewhere.
3.Complete at least two courses in each division at Swarthmore; these courses must be at least 1 credit each.

Isn't 3. redundant? If you have to complete at least 3 courses in each of the three divisions of the College, you obviously have to complete at least 2 courses in each division. By "the College" in 2. do they include Bryn Mawr and Haverford?

dchow, I think you would get more helpful, specific answers if you went to your advisor and/or some SAMs. Email some upperclass students; email your SAM from your hall last year. Email the registrar’s office if you need to. Ask people whose job it is to know this, rather than the handful of parents, parent/alums, recent grads, and one or two current students who read and post here.

From my point of view, it looks as if 3 is seeking to further emphasize that after all possible AP, transfer, IB, or other outside credits have been awarded to satisfy the distribution requirements, you still must take two classes at Swat in each division (and across two different departments in each division, per 4).

But again, this is what SAMs (yours or any others) and your advisor are there to clarify for you.

Check with your advisor or e-mail the registrar to confirm, but Swarthmore’s language is very specific.

You have to take three credits in each of the three divisions.

In each division, the three courses have to be in at least two different departments, so you can’t take all three humanities credits in the English dept.

In each division, one of the three credits can come from elsewhere (AP credit, another college, or study abroad).

In each division, two of the three credits must come at Swarthmore. Unless the registrar indicates otherwise, I would assume that “at Swarthmore” means at Swarthmore. Not at Haverford. Not at Bryn Mawr. Not at summer session. Not at study abroad. At Swarthmore.

3 isn’t redundant. As ID said, it’s to make sure that 2/3 of the courses/credits are taken at Swat, not BMC, HC, or anywhere else. The College means Swat. ;]

dchow,
ID spelled it out for you in above post.

In any case, this is not an emergency. You can talk to your adviser when you get back to Swat. You are supposed to have your adviser sign off on your class selection - that’s a good time to talk about class planing.
If you don’t feel comfortable enough with your adviser for some reason, you can ask any professor that you do like to serve as you academic adviser until you get a new one based on your intended major next spring.
