Hey all: I'm thinking about applying to Knox college. The only thing keeping me from doing so is this quote I have in the Princeton Review Best 351 collees book: "The weekends are weak, unless your friends considt of Keystone and Bud Light"

ugh...is it really that bad? is there nothing to do and is it really in the middle of nowhere?

Comments would be appreciated. I love everything else about the school. I would visit but it's way too far away, so I'll have to rely on your guys advice.
Thanks in advance!

My daughter goes to Knox and loves it. She is not a partier but seems to find something to do every weekend. We only live 2 hours from there so if she was really bored she could come home but she hasn't yet. Galesburg is a small city. I don't think there is a whole lot to do there. However, concerts and such come to surrounding towns. I know she is seeing the GooGoo Dolls in the spring in the Quad Cities. Knox would not be the school to pick if you wanted a big social scene. Where do you live and what other schools are you considering?

I linve in Oregon near Portland. I'm looking at Brown (top choice--definitely a reach school--because of their pre-med program) and Northwestern. I also really like liberal arts schools. I've visited Whitman up in Washington. It's also pretty far from any really big cities but seems to be a great school.

I really like the fact that Knox has a neurosciene major but I'm wary of that quote from the Princeton Review and because I've read that 37% of guys go Greek. I'm kinda biased against the Greek system in general.

On a bit of a personal note, I'm kind of a person that likes to hang out w/ people in small groups, watch movies and stuff w/out any of crazy partying.

Well, BBK, what you like to do is what my daughter and her friends do at Knox. As for the Greek scene, if 37% of the guys go greek, then 73% don't. There are some frats there, but I don't think its a hugh presence. There are no sorority houses, the girls just get together. I notice under the college search and selection thread, on the second page there is a thread called "LACs -Why would you go to one?". On the second page of the thread is reply from Ron6103. He goes to Knox and may be able to give you better advise. Good Luck!

Knox has early identification program with Rush Medical school and GW university. 12% of all students go to med schools/ compare to most of colleges sending 1-5 % .
As for Knox weekend scene my D seems to find lots of stuff to do, there are some parties, frat parties included but they open for everyone and of course, there is some drinking but by any means it is NOT a prevalent culture there. I've noticed that she studies often of Sundays/ they do not call it Hard Knox for nothing/.
As Onward's D we live not that far from Knox and if my D wanted to she could come home more often but we see her once or twice during trimester at best.
Road mapping seems to be popular and people get togheter, watch movies, do some EC.
Galesburg is not huge city neither it is catered to students but there are several nice areas with clubs, restaurants, shops etc.
I do greatly recommend you to visit. Schools like Knox are special and I believe only by visiting one can really say for sure if this is school where one might be happy.

It seems like guidebooks tend to say that about rural LACs… Fiske said that about Hamilton and Skidmore, which kind of threw me off as well. I’m not sure how true it is, though - it sounds like for Knox you can avoid it (the drinking/partying).
