I didn't think college football was cool at all until I actually started attending a (division 1) school.

suddenly it's become more exciting and interesting.

there's tuition hikes to support a lot of useless crap around campus, but I don't think I'm paying a whole lot for upkeep of the athletics department.

I just like that I actually posted some real research/stats on the moneymaking aspect, and no one cares. You'd much rather talk out of your @sses & make stuff up based on your own personal biases.

it's cool, I just like spouting that stuff because it makes me feel cool. Honestly, Sports Law was my favorite class I've taken, and it has nothing to do with ANYTHING else I'm studying.

I also love it how I go to a school that doesn't give scholarships but can still cream a lot of schools that do. I don't know how I could live by going to a school without football.

ND has a huge fan group for no apparent reason. Like the Yankees.

I do want ND to do well this year because they haven't had a good year in awhile, but they will never by my team.

The top football powers make $20-30million a year. However, more than half of Division 1 schools lose money on their football team. For every team that draws 70,000, there's a few that struggle to meet the requirement of average attendence to stay in I-A.

My school is I-AA, which means we have less scholarships, smaller stadiums, etc. Basically, less money spent on football programs. My school makes about a million a year during football season, maybe slightly less.

There is a reason why Notre Dame has a hugh fan base-- Tradition and National Television.

ND was the pinnacle of College Football... not anymore. They do need to weaken thier schedule...it's nearly impossible to go undefeated playing teams they're playing.

my daughter has never attended a school with a football team.
Her 6-12 private prep school had :soccer- ultimate-basketball- track-um,... oh dance- drama & music- some kids were also on local public school teams for sports that weren't offered
Oh and many went skiing/hiking/climbing on weekends
My daughter rode horses
Her college doesn't have football either- they do have rugby and playing paintball with the president and profs is real popular :)

I obviously don't think football is necessary to a college education-

up at uvm we dont have a football team but we have a sick hockey team and a sick basketball team. Winter sports season is awesome. Right now its just college parties and all the regular stuff everyone else does

IMO, you're born where you are born, and those are your sports teams. I was born in northern VA, therefore, by fact, my sports teams are the Redskins, Capitals, DC United, Bullets (Wizards... Bullets was a much more appropriate name, how many wizards are in DC? exactly), Orioles (though that one is fading) and the Nationals.

You can be a fan of a college team if 1. you go there, 2. a parent / family member goes there, or 3. They are based where you live (ie people who live in Oklahoma can root for OU.

Because the Yankees win a lot, is not a reason for them to have a lot of fans. Bandwagon fans are lame to the max. The Capitals haven't won a Stanley Cup in their history, that doesn't mean I get to pick a new team to cheer for, come on.

I grew up really hating football. I despised it during High School because 1.) I was in the marching band and 2.) It seemed all of the booster money went to their Underarmor backpacks! Needless to say I didn't spend my Saturdays in highschool going to football games (unless I was forced to) and most of my friends didn't go, either. In fact, very little people went to the football games besides girlfriends and parents.

Trust me, there are other things to do. You know, like something more entertaining than watching jocks slam into each other.

Haha, college football is much more interesting than high school, or even pro football IMO. Though it's definitely not necessary to only consider schools that are D1.

I've got to agree with soccerguy about that one. I too am from NoVA, and even though I'm in LA now, I still am rooting for the Redskins. (Kind of weird that they're 3-0 so far  ). In the years past, I had always watched Virginia Tech football. I lived VT football, kept track of VT football, watched VT football bowl games, etc. I watched the BCA classic game last year, VT vs. USC. I had applied to both schools, but I rooted on VT since I had always been a loyal fan. Eventually, I turned down VT for USC. While I am a USC fan now for obvious reasons, I do still cheer on VT.

Although I admit that could stop if USC and VT go to the Rose Bowl this year :o. It's very likely....

Oh, and one more thing. There's a substantial percentage of people I know at USC who are really skeptical about the game at Notre Dame. The way we've played our last two games, it could be a bad one for us.

Remember that football season is only half the year, and half that time your team is on the road. So you're going to have a lot of free Saturdays anyway (I'm at a Div III school - sundresses and ties to home games, away games aren't televised so barely anyone even bothers to find out the result)

oh, and soccerguy, what's wrong with rooting for a team you think is exciting to watch?

I root for Ukraine in soccer (i figure you'll know what i'm talking about here) because they've got Shevchenko and he's so exciting to watch and the best in the world right now.

GO YANKEES! (I'm from New York City, btw, right by Shea Stadium, but the Yankees are just more fun to watch than the Mets)

Free Saturdays? Hit the road, man! At least that's my plan.

Redski- Unless UT or USC lose, something tells me VT will be the third wheel as Auburn was last year. Personally, I would rather have VT/USC in the Rose Bowl than UT, but I have a hunch. Unless Brown reverts to his usual position as Stoop's whipping boy again this week. (the Red River Shootout is this Saturday, right?)

groov- HS games are on Friday nights, not Saturdays. Unless you went to college games. I can see where you are coming about booster money (the band always gets shafted, in more ways than just money), but you do have a cynical outlook on the team. The team represents more than just missappropirated funds and jocks slamming into each other. But I am not about to wax rhetoric about this...
