Diversity Achiever's Program

Can anyone comment? Is this a good thing or a waste of time? My D -accepted for Fall at UP - received an invite from PSU to attend the "2009 Achiever's Program." It's a two-night stay in the dorms, vistis to classes and lots of eating. Current students and Admissions staff serve as hosts. I say it has something to do with diversity or multicultural something something because of the office it appears to be from.

My D2 is a urm, but she had the stats to get in without that edge, if it is an edge (I'm not convinced). She didn't get to Top 10% of her almost all-white high school with any special considerations. I'm just wondering about this Achiever's Program invite. She received a similar invite last Fall. Now this one for accepted students. I'm leaning in the direction of advising her not to do it (if I say 'no' she won't) but I'm not sure of the meaning of these two days. We were going to go there anyway for a one day accepted students day for kids accepted into the same undergraduate division.

Has anyone ever attended this thing and can advise me?

I know some people who are hosting this. Basically it is a route for PSU to pursuade some urms to attend PSU in the fall and boost their stats.

I got that too and am somewhat in the same boat as your D. I got in early this fall as a URM, however my stats were good enough that I didn't feel that the edge was taken advantage of.

Anyways, I won't be attending though since I've visited PSU more times than I can count. But being that this is an overnight visitation program for accepted students AND that PSU treats URMs like gold, I don't see the down side in participating :)

Hmmm. I wonder.

Anyway, thanks to both of you for responding. We did put down the 300 buck deposit for an SLO dorm but she hasn't made a final decision about where she will go. It may sound strange but she applied to 11 colleges without a favorite. She's only heard from two of them (both acceptances) and has heard nothing yet about financial aid from anyone.

Sigh. I"ll be glad when this is all over. Mid-April can't come fast enough.

I guess I'll leave this Achiever's Weekend thing up to her.

Plainsman, Generally, there is no admissions tip at PSU for URMs. However, if you are planning to come for an admitted students day, I'd come for the Achiever's Program, when she will be part of a smaller group and the school will be "courting her" (unless you are trying to dissuade her from attending).

Thanks 1moremom. Ironically, our scheduled visit for accepted students in her likely future undergraduate department is on the same day as one of the days for this Achiever's Program. I took a peak online at the itinerary for the Achiever's Program and I'm not too sure about it. Apparently you don't actually attend classes but sit in on an hour and a half lecture on "The Classroom Experience," led by someone who heads the race relations project. What's up with that? Hmmmm. Are there problems the administration wants to warn URMs about?

I don't know about that. Why would anyone want to hear about "The Classroom Experience" as opposed to experiencing the classroom?

Your guess is as good as mine. Funny way to "court" students.
