I heard the diversity at WF sucks. I live 45 minutes from WFU, but havent done a college visit yet. I was wondering if this is true and if this hampers the learning? WF has a lot of wealthy, white kids, does this lead to socio-economic/racial separation? what about the greek scene?

1) Diversity might not be as high as other places.
2) Does not hamper learning.
3) Yes, there are weathy, white kids, but they can be found in similar numbers across every single college in the US and A.
4) No socio-economic/racial separation at Wake. The minorities that are at Wake integrate very well. They are let out of their dormitory rooms to mingle with the white/rich kids for many hours a day. This is easy to do because they are mostly segregated in the basement of Collins. So yes, there is some mingling when the basement is unlocked and they are allowed to leave. Getting them back is somewhat problematic.
5) The Greek scene is, as I've assumed you've heard, more prevalent here than at other schools. I believe the % is 30% men and 50% women are Greek or sometimes from Turkey, Bulgaria, or Albania. We've brought this disgusting statistic to the attention of the Admissions Office and we've been assured that they will work to slash the number of Greeks at Wake Forest.

Go watch Borat's movie!!!! I'm honestly so tired of this question. Sorry ns347. It doesn't matter if you're Indian, live on $1 a day, or you're not into the whole Greek thing. You'll be alright. While there is a clear Wake strerotype that all know about, I urge you to visit the school yourself and make up your own mind. I'm sure you'll find that the streotype is way blown out of proportion, though I'm not saying that we are somewhat lagging slightly behind other schools. Visit!

lol I don't mean it in a sense to insult wake or stereotype about it. But I heard similar things about Babson College and I actually went there and could confirm it. I know being rich/greek doesnt make u a bad person to study with (it might even make u better). I am just saying that if the majority of the population is of one type, then everyone seems the same, and the few that are different feel isolated. I plan to visit soon, its looks like a really good school.

Emsibdn brings up a good point, though. We all hear the rumors about how non-diverse Wake Forest is, and the truth of the matter is it's how you feel that matters more than the actual statistics. When you get right down to it, no, the demographics of Wake Forest aren't representative of America as a whole or Winston-Salem especially. But I don't think that people who aren't the stereotypical Wake student (if such a person exists) feel isolated. I know that I don't, and I'm pretty far from the stereotype. I have found that Wake is a place where it's really easy to make friends and easy to find people like you, no matter who you are.

I don't know anyone here that feels isolated because of their race, religion, or anything of that nature. In terms of diversity of thought, some people might argue that Wake is conservative, but I'd have to say that there's a wide representation of political/intellectual beliefs on campus. There's sure to be a club or organization full of the sort of people you'd most like to hang out with, study with, live with, etc. Basically, make a visit, sit in a class, and then decide. The preps are here, but I wouldn't say they make up a majority.

No racial discrimination according to me.
If by Indian, you mean from the Indian Subcontinent, I'm Indian too.

Emsibdn, every school does have 'rich white' kids. BUT, you have to accept that Wake Forest has a bigger proportion. But this does not hamper education at all and also the social life.

The Greek life is real good, they throw awesome parties. lol.

Visit, visit, visit, and watch Borat's movie.

I agree with ginny in that you have to look at the impact rather than just stare at the statistics. Plus, Wake has said it plans to do more to boost diversity (though there is more to it than just colour). I agree with saketm (congrats on SG), as I've said, if you look at colleges across the entire country, the vast majority share a lot with Wake, if you catch my drift. Anywho, it obviously does not hamper education at all, at least that I've noticed.

Greek life is retarded. Regardless of college. It's for male students whose daddies didn't teach them how to mack or were neglected because daddy was always away on business trips and didn't teach them much of anything about being a man. It's for female students whose mommies didn't teach them how to play guys and wrap them around their little fingers, and were neglected because mommy was always doing something else and didn't teach them much of anything by way of being a woman. Anyone who is Greek should walk around feeling ashamed rather than thinking of themselves as hot stuff. Greek life is remedial school for bad parenting or a mediocre high school experience or not feeling worthy of yourself unless you're part of a special group. That's right...special...and not the good kind.

Where's the parenting?!?! I want the truth!!!! Oh, right, you can't... you can't handle the truth. Greek life... puhleaseeeee...

WAKE WANTS DIVERSITY.
The frats are good, until you join them. im not joining one. its too much work. i figure ill always have friends in one. its freaking expensive to join a frat too.

im diverse, and trust me the so called 'rich white kids' arent as bad as you give them credit for. there is no discrimination.

hahahahaha

The diversity here in my class (2010!) was the highest ever at about 18%. I have not encountered any ignorant or racist comments towards anyone. However, I have heard of a certain fraternity having some condescending attitudes, but this was told to me through other people, I didn't actually witness anything. Actually schools like CH have more problems, becuase minorities tend to self-segregate, here that is not the case. Wake just gets a bad reputation because of being white/rich, which it is to some degree. I'm not rich by any means and I have yet to find myself out of place.
I don't know whether emsibdn's comments regarding greek life are sarcastic or not :) but Greek is pretty big here (bigger for females though the proportion is 33% in frats and 66% in sors) I might rush, but I don't know if I want to join a frat. Primarily because I don't like to conform :) but there are lots of different frats here and there are frats that are for people who don't seem to fit that stereotype. Your perception might change.
You should definetely visit, it's a great place :)

hehehehe... 100% serious. I just don't like Greek life and the vast majority of Greeks. Maybe like 20% of fraternity members at Wake are alright in my book. I detest 95% of all sorority members at Wake. Two frats had been sweating me to join and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what made them think I was remotely interested. Luckily it's too late in the game right now, so no more sweating me. Hahahahaha. I'm good friends with a buncha Greeks, but like I said... remedial school. Not something to be proud of.

Yeah, some of them seem elitist. The biggest drawback seems that their whole life is consumed by the fraternity and you are just lumped together with the lot of them. For some of them it seems to be like their only extra thing they do. I'd rather do some clubs I'm genuinely interested in like SG and MUN than a frat if it came down to it. I might give rush a shot, i still haven't decided...

edit:
also (continuing a rant on frats) they may do some good things, but really most it is is partying and its stupid to join something of that magnitude of a committment just for that. I have yet to see a frat whose is relatively balanced.

Yeah, some of the brothers there seem nice. People have told me Sig Nu and Chi Psi were balanced, but I really have no idea. I just know I don't want to join DKE :)

Sig Nu?! That person must have been a drug dealer high off his own supply. Chi Psi, I would agree a bit. DKE hell no. Same for PIKA and company.
