I was wondering as to whether there is much diversity at BC and whether the stereotype of BC being preppy central is warranted or not? Thanks.

This has been discussed many times. The general consensus is that while the campus population may be dominated by Caucasians, the university has been attempting to recruit minorities, as well. I’ve been the campus once on an Eagle Eye Session and campus tour, and the people (albeit being mostly white) were very friendly and took my questions candidly. Being Asian, I didn’t feel uncomfortable at all.

Is there diversity? Only if you choose to look for it. From what I read, BC has plenty of cultural clubs on campus. Otherwise, it’s true: you will see mostly white people across the entire place.

And the demographics at local universities isn’t much different either. Boston University, for example, has a similar demographic to BC percentage-wise, but however is regarded as more “diverse” because of its massive student population. Because of that, even minorities can feel numerous.

A friend of mine is a current student, and, coming from a VERY diverse high school, she said she definitely noticed the lack of diversity at first. However, there are people of all races on campus, and she did say that in the last few years the school has been working on improving this, and has gotten more diverse than it used to be.

She also told me that while, yes, one does find preppy kids at BC, they are in no way the majority. There are all kinds of people at BC, and most anyone can find somewhere they fit in.

Awesome. I’ve been wondering this as well. Being a Chicano from Texas I wondered whether the atmosphere at BC would suit me very well. Reading this though puts me more at ease, especially since my decision is between BC and Amherst. Any of yall going to the Admit day on the 26th?

I will also be attending the April 26th orientation. Shaggy, the class of 2013 is probably going to be the most diverse- I hear Boston college really went out of its way this year to recruit minority kids from the inner city. What Savs mentioned in his post is quite accurate, because I visited BC a while back and everyone seemed really approachable. I am also a minority, so don’t feel left out.

The biggest thing for me is the interaction between the races. I don’t want to be automatically lumped in with all minorities, I want to be able to make friends with every kind of person. I’m wondering if BC is like that.

I posted this in an earlier thread about diversity at BC. The Caucasian students here are very friendly and approachable. As long as you make some sort of attempt at befriending them, there should be no problem with you having white friends.
