Diversity at Cal Poly SLO

I’m going into Cal Poly SLO as a Freshman next fall, and I’m a little bit concerned… Not that I have a problem with any single racial group, but I’m wondering: About what percentage of the school is Hispanic? Asian? African American? White? etc etc… I myself am a Mexican male, but I would like to know more about the school’s demographics. If this helps at all, I’m entering as an architectural engineering major.

Here you go buddy. Here is every demographic statistic you ever wanted to know about Cal Poly including racial breakdowns. This is the 2011 Cal Poly Fact Book and it is 92 pages long.

We are a multiracial, multicultural, dual citizenship holding household (Japanese, Jewish, Central/Eastern European, Filipino). We look like locals in Hawaii, and don’t stick out in SoCal. We draw attention in other states as we clearly look and sound “exotic”. The high school my kid went to in SoCal was mostly Latino and Asian. So, we had some concerns about Cal Poly as well. However, after having just completed his freshman year, we can say with absolute confidence that my son felt completely at home at Cal Poly and this feeling of acceptance happened immediately upon arrival. No worries, you’ll have a blast and fit right in. In comparison to other schools nationally, Cal Poly is very diverse. For an elite California school, it has a higher Caucasian population and a much lower Asian demographic.

The entering Freshman class of 2011, of which my son was a part was:

13.8% Hispanic/ Latino
0.7% African American
0.2% Native American
0.2% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
12.7% Asian
6.5% Multiracial
60.9% White
0.9% Non-Resident Alien
4.1% Unknown
100% Total

Total student ethnic profile was:

12.9% Hispanic/ Latino
0.8% African American
0.4% Native American
0.3% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
10.8% Asian
4.8% Multiracial
62.7% White
1.3% Non-Resident Alien
6% Unknown
100% Total

By the way, for your major in particular you are in the best school you could hope for. Cal Poly is a leader nationally for architectural engineering. Consider yourself blessed to have made it into one of the best programs in the country for your major. Huge congratulations.

Thanks! This makes me feel much better!

Good luck!

Very diverse ? With only 0.8% African American ?

I visited Cal Poly during Open House and coming from East Los Angeles, Cal Poly is not diverse at all. I mean yes, occasionally you do see some non-whites, but when I toured the Electrical Engineering facilities, I only saw three people that were non-white out of the whole group. Diversity is one of the main reasons why I almost turned Cal Poly down. Although it will probably be somewhat of a minor challenge to make friends, I think I will be well off once I get there this Fall. In case you are wondering, I am Mexican as well but raised in California.

^I feel comfortable making friends with people of any race, but definitely hope to see you there!

Don’t get me wrong, I love meeting people from every corner of the world - even Martian! & for sure! See you there too

LINGUINI01 and CalPolyskeptic – I am very glad that both of you set aside your diversity concerns and decided to go to Cal Poly. The school needs students like you. You will be welcomed like my son and you will be very glad you chose Cal Poly. Additionally, both of you have chosen challenging majors. Within a very short period of time, you will forget about these relatively trivial issues as you will be fully focused on surviving your classes.

My god you’re right… I’m very nervous about that workload and all the competition -_-

Once you start getting involved in your classes, you will think of very little else. Workload will be your main issue. The next issue will be mastering the content of the classes themselves. Your intellectual capacity will be put to the test. Fortunately, competition will not be a major concern. Unlike other schools, Cal Poly students are very cooperative and supportive. It is part of the school’s culture.

I’m glad someone brought this up. I didn’t realize how much I appreciate a diverse environment until I visited cal poly… I myself am white and have always lived in very diverse cities: LA, SF Bay area. I am going to miss it!!!

Mostly Caucasian with some decent sized Asian-American and Hispanic groups. All other groups are very small percentage wise. It reflects the surrounding area. SLO County is mostly Caucasian with some decent sized Asian-American and Hispanic groups.

I’m Middle Eastern and I really liked the environment at SLO from my visits.

It’s whiter (lol why put around with the term “diverse”) than the other cal states, no getting around that, but they won’t bite you.

That’s right, discoinferno, us “whities” don’t bite!

Growing up in southern Orange County, about 80% of my friends were asian. No complaints here!

How has it gone or did it go for you?

@Alteclansing1993, welcome to CC! You won’t likely get a response since this thread has been dead for almost 3 years. You might want to start a new thread. Good luck.
