Diversity at Davidson

I've looked at some college books and it seems like the diversity at davidson is really lacking. I'm wondering how other students react to students of color? Are there people who have never seen an asian before?

Yea that's what I've been seeing from a lot of college books too. But my counselor told me they were working on it. Well I'll be going there next year, and I'm Korean haha. And I'm sure the students they are used to seeing students of color; last time I checked the profile for the class of 2012, there were 20 or so Asian students, and even more African-American students I think. Hopefully they'll be seeing more of us Asians in the near future : )

Davidson is not hostile to minority students...nor are its students ignorant or excessively sheltered. People here don't look at each other as black or white or Asian or Jewish or Muslim or gay or straight or handicapped -- people are taken for who they are inside. If someone is nice, he'll make friends. If someone is mean, he'll have a harder time making friends.

Minorities certainly don't constitute a significant ratio of the student body, but every hall on campus has at least two or three minority students and usually at least one international student. On my hall, we have two Jews, three blacks, a girl from Ghana, a girl from Turkey, and a girl who is bisexual -- there are plenty of differences and everyone accepts that.

Davidson also offers several opportunities for minority students to bond. They have a program before orientation each year called S.T.R.I.D.E. where the minority students can come meet each other and realize that they are not in fact a minority presence. It also gives them the chance to move in before everyone else.

Geographically, we're pretty diverse, too. On my hall: South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Ghana, Turkey, Texas, and Massachusetts, I believe.

hey swimgirl, glad i won't be the only korean frosh there haha

very nicely said, amplifiar842

and yay! i think you're the only other korean i know of that will be going to davidson next year haha oh well

See section B2 for Racial/Ethnic stats

I know a black girl who goes there and she LOVES it. Doesn't seem out of place at all.

It worries me to think this…

My (hispanic) daughter has applied to Davidson and just attended a fly-in specifically for multi-cultural students. It was a diverse group and she had a wonderful time. It is certainly one of her top choices, especially after the visit. If Davidson appeals to you then you have that in common with everyone there, regardless of your background.

I was at that fly-in too! A lack of diversity was one of my concerns; in fact, look at past posts made me scared that it’d be incredibly homogeneous. Yet looking at the student body and the class make up, especially now in 2013, I found that it was far more diverse than I expected, even if you’re just looking only at race. It’s definitely my top choice at this point.
